2021 IRAAL Annual Conference: Applying Linguistics in the 21st Century – AILA

November 26–27, 2021

University College Dublin, Ireland

http://www.iraal.ie/events.html

The Irish Association of Applied Linguistics (IRAAL) annual conference brings together researchers in all areas of linguistics working in Ireland or internationally. The theme of this year’s conference is ‘Applying Linguistics in the 21st Century’.

This theme was chosen to represent the changing face of Applied Linguistics in Ireland and abroad. Applied Linguistics is sometimes understood as being restricted to language learning and teaching, but as the Covid-19 pandemic has taught us, we are doing much more than teaching and learning languages. Through discussions, we can learn much more about the globalisation of language learning and how we are reimagining the traditional paradigms of Applied Linguistics. The 2021 IRAAL Annual Conference will reflect the broadness of our experiences and the myriad areas of cognate disciplines to which we contribute. In this spirit, the Organising Committee wishes to invite you to the 2021 IRAAL Annual Conference. We intend to meet live online for the conference beginning on Friday morning, November 26th and continuing on Saturday afternoon, November 27th to accommodate as many time zones as possible.

The topics for papers may include, but are not restricted to:
Bilingualism; Classroom Language Use; Corpus Linguistics; Discourse Studies; EAP; First and Second Language Acquisition; Forensic Linguistics; Language Policy; Linguistic Landscapes; Multilingualism; Pedagogy; Phonology; Second and Foreign Language Learning; Sociolinguistics; TESOL; Teaching Methodology; Translanguaging; and Translation Studies.

Submissions from postgraduate students and early career researchers are particularly welcomed.

The languages of the conference are English and Irish.

We invite submissions for three types of presentation: INDIVIDUAL PAPERS: Oral presentations on original research by one or more authors within a 30-minute period for presentation and questions. THEMATIC PANELS: Thematic Panels on original research consisting of three or four papers, presented within a 90–120 minute period (including presentations, questions and panel discussions), may be submitted.

POSTERS: Posters will be displayed during a dedicated poster session where the presenters will introduce their posters and will be available to answer questions from delegates. Posters of standard A0 size should be submitted to the registration desk on the morning of the conference.

Perspectives and Trajectories of the Language Teacher in the 21st Century (TPLang21) – AILA

This ReN brings together established language educators: teachers, teacher trainers and researchers, who have been working on ICT and (self-)empowering methods of CPD. By first taking stock of existing training programs and approaches and collecting and comparing these approaches internationally across several continents (Europe, South America, North America, Asia), we intend to explore the beliefs and underlying ideals which inform the training and self-training of language teachers, with the aim of ascertaining trajectories of professional development, as defined in a wide variety of teaching and learning cultures.

The specific objectives of this Research Network are:

  • To collect information about CPD programs which focus on ICT
  • To collect information about CPD programs focusing on self-empowerment of teachers
  • To compare different, international approaches to CPD
  • To compare different beliefs about teachers (“ideal” teachers) from an intercultural perspective
  • To develop a detailed picture of the landscape of language teacher training in terms of digital skills development, according to target culture, culture of origin, teaching and learning cultures, etc.

Diversity and Inclusivity in English Language Education (DIELE) – AILA

December 11–12, 2020

Ho Chi Minh City Open University, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

http://www.diele.org/

Inclusive education aims to create equity in the classroom and raise attainment for all students, regardless of the challenges they may experience. In inclusive English language classrooms, curricula are accessible to all learners, instruction is innovative and differentiated, teachers ensure that the diverse community of learners feels welcome and valued, and the individual learners receive indispensable support to develop their inborn and new talents, and successfully achieve their goals.

This conference is an excellent opportunity for discussing key issues and current trends in promoting inclusive education in classrooms where English is taught as a foreign, second, additional or international language. A real strength of this event is that it brings together a diverse audience comprising academics, teacher educators, teacher-researchers, researchers, policy makers and materials developers, who are keen on promoting and utilising theory, research and practice to make English language education more attractive, effective, inclusive and innovative.

Conference aims

The aims of the conference are as follows:

  • To offer a deeper understanding of diversity and inclusivity in English language education, and the benefits and challenges they bring to the teaching-learning process.
  • To create a forum for sharing current and innovative practices that promote diversity and inclusivity in the English language classroom.
  • To reflect on current English language courses and the extent to which they integrate the constructs of diversity and inclusivity into their curricula, and suggest improvements if need be.
  • To promote interdisciplinary research of particular relevance to diversity and inclusivity in English language education and, more specifically, to enable teacher-researchers to present their empirical findings about specific pedagogical questions they have investigated and academic researchers to not only showcase their findings, but also enter into a dialogue about the implications of their studies for classroom practice.
  • To bring together researchers and research scholars to exchange their experiences, discuss challenges and promote new approaches to researching diversity and inclusivity in English language education.
  • To build a global network of experts that seeks to publicize the topics of diversity and inclusivity in English language education, and leads to the creation of two high-quality publications:
  • an edited volume on Exploring Inclusivity in English Language Education: International Perspectives (edited by D. Bao, D. O’Reilly and M. Barnes); and
  • a special issue of The European Journal of Applied Linguistics and TEFL on Diversity and Representation in the ELT Classroom (edited by A. Cirocki and H. Motschenbacher).
Significance of the conference

This conference will bring together academics, researchers, policy makers and materials developers to make preparations for diversity and inclusivity to become permanent in schools. The conference is a response to the significant gap in English language education and is hoped it will give prominence to the two concepts in question, thus addressing their noticeable insufficiency in current:

  • debates at local and international levels;
  • research, both pure and applied;
  • publications that link theory, research and practice; and
  • English language policies and curricula.
Call for Submissions

The Conference Committee invites conceptual and empirical papers on one or more of the following topics. The topics relate to promoting diversity and  inclusivity in classrooms where English is taught as a foreign, second, additional or international language, and include, but are not limited to:

  • teaching students from marginalised groups
  • teaching students with special educational needs
  • learner experiences and voices
  • teacher experiences and reflections
  • current educational policies
  • curriculum, pedagogy and assessment
  • assistive technologies, accessible resources and diverse instructional materials
  • critical pedagogy
  • parental/family engagement with schools
  • identity, gender and equality
  • student mental health and well-being
  • teacher beliefs, attitudes and practices
  • teacher education and continuing professional development

Languages & the Media 2020: The 13th International Conference on Language Transfer in Audiovisual Media – AILA

Radisson Blu Hotel, Berlin, Germany

June 8–10, 2020

http://www.languages-media.com

The 2020 edition of Languages & the Media, the 13th International Conference on Language Transfer in Audiovisual Media, will be riding the wave of recent trends that are fast becoming reality in audiovisual localisation.

New working conditions are rolling in faster than ever before. Innovation is the order of the day. The industry is consolidating while new entrants are disrupting the conventional workplace. Platforms are proliferating. Immersive environments are becoming more pervasive. New workflows are emerging. Concurrent translation and post-editing are gaining ground. Language tools are being integrated and experimentation and reinvention abound.

The need for research has never been greater. With the validity of older norms and standards under scrutiny, new models of good practice are emerging, forcing the audiovisual localisation industry to take stock and re-examine audience needs. Legislation and regulation are also whipping up the wind of change. As our 2018 keynote speaker David Padmore pointed out, our shared goal is to break down language and sensory barriers to audiovisual content that educates, informs and entertains the world. To achieve this, all stakeholders must come together and collaborate to address our industry’s challenges with responsible, comprehensive and fair strategies. And what better place to do this than at the 13th Languages & the Media International Conference which will be held at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Berlin from June 8 – 10, 2020 under the overall theme “Riding the Wave”.

Throughout its 25-year long history, Languages & the Media has established itself as Europe’s leading conference in the AVT industry and is a vibrant hub for exchange, learning and discussion. At the Languages & the Media 2020, broadcasters, OTT platforms, language service providers, researchers, trainers, professionals, practitioners and all those who produce, market or distribute audiovisual content for information, entertainment or educational purposes will come together to address issues on how to thrive in this dynamic mediascape.
