InJAL

International Journal of Applied Linguistics

The International Journal of Applied Linguistics (InJAL) publishes articles that explore the relationship between expertise in linguistics, broadly defined, and the everyday experience of language. Its scope is international in that it welcomes articles which show explicitly how local issues of language use or learning exemplify more global concerns.

InJAL focusses on "working towards a truly international representation of work in applied linguistics, with equitable participation from different parts of the world" (Editorial 2007, 17/1, 1f.). This means on the one hand putting "particular emphasis on supporting authors and publishing papers from a wide variety of regions and cultures, thereby demonstrating that while the language of this journal is English (...), its concerns are by no means confined to what goes on in English-speaking communities", and on the other hand paying "particular attention in the reviewing process to the requirement that papers from diverse backgrounds make explicit how local issues in applied linguistics exemplify more global concerns". Since the issue 17.1, InJAL has published news from AILA: "InJAL will contribute to making the work of AILA better known to researchers, especially the opportunities this association creates for international networking and collaboration."

The International Journal of Applied Linguistics InJAL is published in co-operation with AILA. In 2007, AILA has given its official endorsement of InJAL. The union will promote the goal of encouraging international scholarship that both the Journal and the Association share. AILA members receive a 20% discount on InJAL.

About Research Networks

AILA is looking for researchers interested in organizing Research Networks (ReN) focused on special topic areas of Applied Linguistics. If you would like to work internationally on your area of research together with other scholars from all over the world, you might consider applying to be a ReN organizer.

What is a ReN?

Research Networks (ReNs) seek to promote research and its dissemination in all academic areas of AILA, with a particular focus on areas that have the potential for new cross-disciplinary research.

ReNs exist for three years and can be renewed. At any point in time, there will be 16 ReNs in existence. Generally, the life of a ReN is not expected to be longer than six years. Reapplications are required every three years by the criteria listed below:

  • at least five members, some of whom should be new scholars,
  • multinational composition with universities from at least three countries,
  • participants are active in the research area of the ReN pertaining to applied linguistics,
  • a program for research activities for the three years between congresses, including a commitment to present a symposium at the upcoming AILA World Congress and an organizer (one of the members) who liases with the ReN Coordinator.

How to set up a ReN

For applications, the ReN organizer must submit a proposal to the ReN Coordinator. The deadline for submission is two months after the World Congress. The proposal should consist of

  • a statement concerning the scope of the ReN,
  • a list of the participants of the ReN and their affiliation,
  • a plan for ReN activities for the upcoming three years, and
  • a commitment to fill their ReN symposium slot at the AILA Congress three years hence.

Each ReN organizer is responsible for a brief written report to the ReN Coordinator every three years (2 months after the congress).

Applications to set up a ReN should be directed to the AILA ReN Coordinator and the decision on the acceptance of the proposal will be notified to the ReN organizers no later than two months after the proposal submission deadline.

AILA World Congresses

Every three years AILA holds its international World Congress. This congress is the biggest event in Applied Linguistics, bringing together - usually more than 2.000 - researchers and practitioners from all areas of Applied Linguistics for five days.

The Congress is characterized by high level presentations and discussions on key issues of the field. Its format includes keynote addresses, plenary speeches by outstanding scholars, invited symposia, symposia, individual papers and poster presentations.

The first AILA Congress took part in Nancy, France, 1964, presenting in its strands cutting edge findings from theory and practice of the time. Following this model, the programs of the Past Congresses represent the history of the discipline.

Each congress is organised by a different national or regional affiliate. The congress sites alternate between different areas of the world to reflect the global character of AILA.

What is AILA?

AILA is the acronym for Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliqué or International Association of Applied Linguistics.

AILA is the international federation of national or regional associations of Applied Linguistics. Through its member associations, AILA currently has a membership of more than 8.000 individuals worldwide who as researchers, policy makers or practitioners are active in the field of Applied Linguistics.

Applied Linguistics is an interdisciplinary field of research and practice dealing with practical problems of language and communication that can be identified, analysed or solved by applying available theories, methods and results of Linguistics or by developing new theoretical and methodological frameworks in Linguistics to work on these problems. Applied Linguistics differs from Linguistics in general mainly with respect to its explicit orientation towards practical, everyday problems related to language and communication.

The problems Applied Linguistics deals with range from aspects of the linguistic and communicative competence of the individual such as first or second language acquisition, literacy, language disorders, etc. to language and communication related problems in and between societies such as e.g. language variation and linguistic discrimination, multilingualism, language conflict, language policy and language planning.

AILA is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) having FCR (Formal Consultative Relations) with UNESCO.

Regionalization

The need for more regional cooperation among Applied Linguists is obvious in Europe in particular, where there always has been a vast amount and a wide variety of work in Applied Linguistics, but where cross-border cooperation so far takes place only on a smaller scale.

At a meeting hosted by the Free University of Bolzano, Italy, September 2006, to increase intra-European cooperation, a group of European AILA affiliates agreed with the then AILA Secretary General, Karlfried Knapp, to set up a Network of European Applied Linguists (AILA-Europe).
