AILA World Congresses

Every three years AILA holds its international World Congress. This congress is the biggest event in Applied Linguistics, bringing together - usually more than 2.000 - researchers and practitioners from all areas of Applied Linguistics for five days.

The Congress is characterized by high level presentations and discussions on key issues of the field. Its format includes keynote addresses, plenary speeches by outstanding scholars, invited symposia, symposia, individual papers and poster presentations.

The first AILA Congress took part in Nancy, France, 1964, presenting in its strands cutting edge findings from theory and practice of the time. Following this model, the programs of the Past Congresses represent the history of the discipline.

Each congress is organised by a different national or regional affiliate. The congress sites alternate between different areas of the world to reflect the global character of AILA.

Regionalization

The need for more regional cooperation among Applied Linguists is obvious in Europe in particular, where there always has been a vast amount and a wide variety of work in Applied Linguistics, but where cross-border cooperation so far takes place only on a smaller scale.

At a meeting hosted by the Free University of Bolzano, Italy, September 2006, to increase intra-European cooperation, a group of European AILA affiliates agreed with the then AILA Secretary General, Karlfried Knapp, to set up a Network of European Applied Linguists (AILA-Europe).

About Research Networks

AILA is looking for researchers interested in organizing Research Networks (ReN) focused on special topic areas of Applied Linguistics. If you would like to work internationally on your area of research together with other scholars from all over the world, you might consider applying to be a ReN organizer.

What is a ReN?

Research Networks (ReNs) seek to promote research and its dissemination in all academic areas of AILA, with a particular focus on areas that have the potential for new cross-disciplinary research.

ReNs exist for three years and can be renewed. At any point in time, there will be 16 ReNs in existence. Generally, the life of a ReN is not expected to be longer than six years. Reapplications are required every three years by the criteria listed below:

  • at least five members, some of whom should be new scholars,
  • multinational composition with universities from at least three countries,
  • participants are active in the research area of the ReN pertaining to applied linguistics,
  • a program for research activities for the three years between congresses, including a commitment to present a symposium at the upcoming AILA World Congress and an organizer (one of the members) who liases with the ReN Coordinator.

How to set up a ReN

For applications, the ReN organizer must submit a proposal to the ReN Coordinator. The deadline for submission is two months after the World Congress. The proposal should consist of

  • a statement concerning the scope of the ReN,
  • a list of the participants of the ReN and their affiliation,
  • a plan for ReN activities for the upcoming three years, and
  • a commitment to fill their ReN symposium slot at the AILA Congress three years hence.

Each ReN organizer is responsible for a brief written report to the ReN Coordinator every three years (2 months after the congress).

Applications to set up a ReN should be directed to the AILA ReN Coordinator and the decision on the acceptance of the proposal will be notified to the ReN organizers no later than two months after the proposal submission deadline.

AILA is composed of the following types of members:

Regular Affiliate Member

A non-profit national or regional representative organization that has maintained an active scientific program in the field of applied linguistics for some time and agrees in writing in the required form required by the bylaws to undertake the responsibilities of membership in AILA, may become a regular affiliate member. Only one organization from one country or region is admitted as a regular affiliated member.

The organization may be a representative of a number of other participating associations within the country or region.

A regular affiliate member organization should normally have no fewer than 20 members.

Annual membership fee in AILA is calculated according to the country classification of the World Bank. Affilitates from countries with high income economies pay US $ 7.50, from countries with upper middle income economies pay US $ 2.50 and from countries with lower middle income economies pay US $ 1.50 for each individual who is a direct member of the respective national or regional organization.

Temporary Affiliate Member

An association that is active in the field of applied linguistics in a country or region where a national or regional representative organization has not yet been established admitted as a regular affiliate member may become a temporary affiliate member.

Only one organization from each country or region is to be admitted as a temporary affiliate member. The organization may be a representative of a number of participating associations within the country or region.

One of the responsibilities of a temporary affiliate member is to promote the formation of a national or regional representative organization as soon as possible.

Temporary affiliate membership is granted for a period of three years. Temporary affiliate membership may be extended only if the temporary affiliate member demonstrates that its application for regular affiliate membership is nearing completion and will be presented for approval within two years from the date of the grant of the extension.

Annual Membership fee in AILA is identical with the fee structure for regular affiliate members.

Description

ReN in Translation and Interpreting was convened as a meeting place for scholars conducting research on translation and interpreting informed by the methods, frameworks and paradigms of Linguistics. Functioning as a forum for intra-disciplinary exchange, its primary goal is to encourage applied research and generate the potential for future collaborative projects, which would help define the subsequent activities of the ReN . Furthermore, it aims to build upon the uniquely broad academic network that AILA provides to activate to promote cross-disciplinary co-operation and to achieve a greater visibility for the research done in our own field.

Description

The aims of the network are to promote research, development and exchange of knowledge and information as well as collaboration in the field of Standard Language Education/Mother Tongue Education. The field deals with the teaching and/or learning within an educational system of the so-called mother tongue, be it a standard language of a nation state that statutorily accepts it as such, the language of education or the language of primary socialisation (a child's first own and/or home language). It is concerned with learners' curricular enculturation to language, literature and culture, and focuses on the disciplinary teaching and/or learning of signs, texts, utterances and their contexts, in particular reading, speaking, writing and listening. Although research may tend to foreground language, the interdisciplinary and complex character of the field opens for collaboration across disciplines.

Tri-Annual Report

Several network members took part in a Nordic one day conference in Växjö, Sweden, November 9, 2005, arranged by the network for Swedish with a Didactic Direction (SmDI). The theme of the conference was the different profiles of the Nordic mother tongue disciplines, and the goal was to establish a platform for future work in the fields of Nordic mother tongue education and research. At the conference members of StLE, Prof. Jon Smidt, Norway, and Associate prof. Ellen Krogh, Denmark, gave presentations.
In 2006 initiatives have been taken towards forming a common nordic research network on StLE/mother tongue education in the nordic countries. This will contribute to strengthening the StLE field of research.

In April 2006 the European Council, Language Policy Division, Strasbourg, France, and the Jagiellonian University, Kraków, Poland organised the international conference "Towards a Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of School Education" in Kraków, Poland. The conference was part of a project aiming at examining the feasibility of producing a common European framework of reference for languages of school education. The convenors of StLE both presented papers at the conference, and an invitation to become members of the network was distributed. Several participants at the Kraków conference have later announced their intentions to take part in the StLE ReN activities in Essen 2008.

IMEN, The International Mother Tongue Education Network, a network the StLE network cooperates with, hosted two sessions at the Kraków conference. In February 2007 a think tank seminar was held at Randsvangen Hotel near Oslo at which several research groups were formed, some of these focusing on research projects in connection with the European Council research programme. At the seminar the ReN plans for Essen 2008 were presented. There is some overlap between IMEN and StLE: the leader of the IMEN board is former MTE convener, prof. Sigmund Ongstad, Norway, and one of the present StLE convenors, Dr. Ellen Krogh, is member of the IMEN board. This means that IMEN activities reach into StLE and to a high degree will point forward to AILA’s "Essen" conference in 2008.
