- Goals
- Fund raising Plan
- Pledge Form
The goal of the Solidarity Award Fund (SAF) is to raise an endowment fund to support scholars to attend AILA meetings (held every three years). These awards are for scholars whose papers are accepted for presentation at the conference, but who are from parts of the world where economies make it difficult, if not prohibitive, for them to travel to the conference. These individuals are the future of our profession and will be the leaders in Applied Linguistics in their countries. The goal of $50,000 for this fundraising campaign would provide funds for this purpose. Actual fund-raising will continue up until the 2008 AILA Congress in Essen.

Fund-Raising Plan
SAF giving will be solicited in five recognized categories. In all instances gifts can be made in a single contribution or as a pledge over three years.
1. Foundation Donors:
Individuals, groups, and organizations that donate a minimum of $1,000 will be recognized as providing major gifts for the fund. These gifts will be mentioned in all publicity announcements for the fund (through the end of fund-raising campaign) and on the AILA website.
2. Scholarship Donors:
Individuals, groups, and organizations that donate a minimum of $800 will also be recognized in all publicity announcements for the fund (through the end of fund-raising campaign) and on the AILA website.
3. Charter Donors:
Individuals, groups, and organizations that donate a minimum of $500 will also be recognized in all publicity announcements for the fund (through the end of fund-raising campaign) and on the AILA website.
4. Honoraria Donors:
Individuals in this category provide honoraria they have received for the purposes of the endowment fund ($200 minimum, without specific amount noted). These individuals will be recognized during the 12 month period following receipt of their honoraria gift.
5. Fund Donors:
Individuals responding to the fund raising request will be listed in the next issue of AILA News and at the next Congress. (Standard donations amounts include $150, $100, $75, $50, $35, $25; Student donation amounts of $20, $15, and $ 10 will also be accepted and recognized). Of course, any donation of any size will be appreciated.
6. Special Gift Donors:
Any individual, group, or organization wishing to consider a special gift well beyond the categories noted above will be given special recognition. Interest in making a special gift can be discussed with Karlfried Knapp (AILA Secretary-General) or Susan Gass (AILA President).

The foundation of AILA was agreed upon at the International Colloquium of Applied Linguistics at the University of Nancy, France (hence AILA's French name), 1964. This decision was a result of two years preparatory work and discussion, with the financial support of the Council of Europe. At that time, the clientele to be served by this new international association was restricted mainly to linguists and language teachers in Europe. The first president of AILA was Bernard Pottier, supported in organizational and administrative matters by Max Gorosch. The founding congress of AILA in Nancy was almost exclusively run in French, and the main strands into which the contributions were organized were automatic translation, language teaching and research cooperation in Europe.
Bernhard Pottier had no direct successor until 1969, when at the Second International Congress of Applied Linguistics at the University of Cambridge (in fact the first one with this title) AILA was virtually refounded and Pit Corder was elected President and Bertil Malmberg became Secretary General. It was from then on that AILA got a constant organizational structure and that AILA Congresses were held on a triennial basis. Also from then on, English became the de facto lingua franca in AILA, although the Association was officially French / English bilingual from its beginning and still is today. This congress also became prototypical for all following AILA Congresses in that its strands represented the key issues in Applied Linguistics of the respective time - in that case, the psychology of second language learning, sociolinguistics, and contrastive linguistics.
Originally a European initiative, AILA has become truly gobal over the past 40 years, including now affiliates from Africa, Asia, Latin America and North America.

AILA is looking for researchers interested in organizing Research Networks (ReN) focused on special topic areas of Applied Linguistics. If you would like to work internationally on your area of research together with other scholars from all over the world, you might consider applying to be a ReN organizer.
ReNs seek to promote the gathering and dissemination of information and the undertaking of research in all academic areas of AILA with a particular focus on areas that have the potential for new cross-disciplinary research.
ReNs exist for three years and can be renewed. At any point in time, there will be about 15 ReNs in existence. Generally, the life of an ReN is not expected to be longer than six years. Renewals beyond the six years would be determined by the criteria listed below.
For the formation of an ReN, the following criteria should be met:
- at least five members, some of whom should be new scholars,
- multinational composition,
- participants are active in the research area of the ReN,
- a program for research activities for the three years between congresses and a commitment to present at the upcoming AILA World Congress,
- nominate from among their members one individual as the organizer of the respective ReN who liases with the ReN Coordinator.
page top
How to set up a ReN
For new applications, the ReN organizer must submit a proposal to the ReN Coordinator at least two months prior to the World Congress. The proposal should consist of
- a statement concerning the scope of the ReN,
- a list of the participants of the ReN and their affiliation,
- a plan for ReN activities for the upcoming three years, and
- a commitment to fill their ReN slot at the AILA Congress three years hence.
Each ReN organizer is responsible for a brief written report to the ReN Coordinator on an annual basis.
When possible, AILA will, upon written request, consider limited financial support for ReN activities.
Applications to set up a new ReN should be directed to the AILA ReN Coordinator.

How a former Scientific Commission (SC) can continue as a ReN
If a current Scientific Commision (SC) of AILA has been demonstrably active, it may continue its research as an ReN by meeting the criteria listed in the section above.
For continuation as a ReN, the presently designated Scientific Commission convener and, in future, the ReN organizer must submit to the ReN Coordinator no more than two months following the World Congress a proposal which demonstrates an active research profile in the preceding three years. In addition, at the most recent AILA Congress, they must have filled their SC/ReN slot with presentations relating to the domain of their ReN/SC.
Specifically, the proposal should consist of:
- evidence of past activities including a description of the session at the most recent AILA World Congress and a statement of evolving research interests of the ReN/existing SC,
- a plan for ReN activities for the upcoming three years,
- a list of the participants of the ReN and their affiliation,
- a commitment to fill their ReN slot at the AILA Congress three years hence.
The decision for renewal will be based on fulfillment of the above criteria as determined by the ReN-Committee as defined in the Bylaws of AILA.
It will be the task of the ReN coordinator to notify the ReN organizers of the specific submission date for proposals to continue and the criteria for continuation.
ReN organizers will be notified of the decision no later than two months after the proposal submission deadline.
Note: A list of the former Scientific Commissions is still available.
