Open Access to AILA Review

The first Open Access digital issue of the AILA Review is now available online: Issue 26/1, on "Applications in Applied Linguistics".The issue departs from a comprehensive concept that views Applied Linguistics as the application of findings, theories and methods of sciences related to issues of language and communication, and that distinguishes different modes of applications (practical vs. theoretical, and top-down, i.e. departing from science, vs. bottom-up, i.e. departing from a real-life problem).

These different modes are exemplified by descriptions of different domains of application that often have a far reaching impact on societies and individuals. Narrowing down the range of problems with language and communication from the level of societies to that of groups and individuals, the contributions describe problem areas and applied linguistic ways of dealing with them in the fields of language policy and planning; language and communication in the legal sphere; communication of migrants in diaspora situations; language and communication in the media; and in the study of communication disorders.

7th Junior Researchers Meeting in Applied Linguistics

http://linguistik.zhaw.ch/de/linguistik/european-conference-on-language-and-digital-communication.html

The Junior Researchers Meeting allows early career applied linguists to present their

research and network in an interactive and informal international environment.

“Junior Researchers” include those working on their Master’s and PhD theses, as

well as those who have graduated within the last three years.

At the conference, each paper session will have designated senior researchers as

commentators to guarantee questions and discussion. The programme will also

include workshops on various aspects of academic career, such as publishing and

seeking for funding.

The conference focuses on language use in digital environments within and across

educational, academic, professional and everyday settings. Besides this conference

focus, papers on other areas of applied linguistics are welcome. A paper may present

also work in progress.

In Memoriam: Theo van Els

On August 4 2015, Theo van Els passed away at the age of 79. For more than 40 years he was the leading figure in Applied Linguistics in the Netherlands. He initiated the writing of the first handbook on Applied Linguistics together with his colleagues Guus Extra, Theo Bongaerts and Charles van Os. The Dutch version appeared in 1977 and an English translation in 1974 with Edward Arnold. Theo was active in many fields, but his main contribution was in the area of language policy and planning, and he was very actively involved in the development of European standards for language proficiency which ultimately led to the Common European Framework of Reference. He set up a large research program aimed at a language policy for foreign languages for the Dutch Ministry of education, which was later on applied in various other countries including Japan.

Theo was a very dedicated colleague and advisor and many of the applied linguists in the Netherlands were his students. He was a warm and caring personality for whom the ‘human measure’ was more important than formalities. In addition he was active in AILA for many years and one of the founders of the Dutch Association of Applied Linguistics.  He will be remembered as one of the early leaders who gave Applied Linguistics a face and status as an independent discipline.

The 49th Annual Meeting of the British Association for Applied Linguistics

Conference theme: Taking stock of Applied Linguistics – Where are we now?

At the time of the Annual Meeting of BAAL in 2016 we will be one and a half decades into the new millennium. The new millennium brought many trends and changes in applied linguistics, for example the increasing use of interdisciplinary approaches in the field, interest in corpus-based studies, the use of new media as data sources and as new environments of communication – which in turn developed new ways of communicating and influenced language. At the same time, processes that have started in the old millennium are continuing to develop and influence the field, such as globalisation, migration and its implications on how languages are used. Looking at the past and present, and understanding the developments of the field, will enable us to move confidently into the future, and to continue to make valuable contributions to society.

In Memoriam: Prof. Chris Candlin

On behalf of the International Association for Applied Linguistics, of which Prof. Christopher Candlin was the President from 1996-2002, I wish to express our most heartfelt condolences to his family at the loss of this influential scholar, generous mentor and professional giant in our field. In the last forty years, Chris Candlin has shaped Applied Linguistics from a field mainly dedicated to the psycholinguistics of English language teaching to a multidisciplinary field of research interested in how language is used in various social, cultural and professional contexts. During his term as President of AILA, he was the driving force behind the establishment of research networks that fostered research across AILA's various affiliates. He was our compass for scientific integrity, professional responsibility, and intellectual generosity. We were happy to be able to recognize his extraordinary achievements by awarding him an AILA Honorary Membership at AILA's 2014 World Congress in Brisbane, Australia. We will miss him sorely.
