Association Néerlandaise de Linguistique Appliquée (ANéLA)
Every three years, AILA holds its international World Congress. This congress is the biggest event in Applied Linguistics, bringing together - usually more than 2.000 - researchers and practitioners from all areas of Applied Linguistics for five days.
The Congress is characterized by high level presentations and discussions on key issues of the field. Its format includes keynote addresses, plenary speeches by outstanding scholars, invited symposia, symposia, individual papers and poster presentations.
The first AILA Congress took part in Nancy, France, 1964, presenting in its strands cutting edge findings from theory and practice of the time. Following this model, the programs of the Past Congresses represent the history of the discipline.
Each congress is organised by a different national or regional affiliate. The congress sites alternate between different areas of the world to reflect the global character of AILA.
AILA is the acronym for Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquée or International Association of Applied Linguistics.
AILA is the international federation of national or regional associations of Applied Linguistics. Through its member associations, AILA currently has a membership of more than 8.000 individuals worldwide who as researchers, policy makers or practitioners are active in the field of Applied Linguistics.
Applied Linguistics is an interdisciplinary field of research and practice dealing with practical problems of language and communication that can be identified, analysed or solved by applying available theories, methods and results of Linguistics or by developing new theoretical and methodological frameworks in Linguistics to work on these problems. Applied Linguistics differs from Linguistics in general mainly with respect to its explicit orientation towards practical, everyday problems related to language and communication.
The problems Applied Linguistics deals with range from aspects of the linguistic and communicative competence of the individual such as first or second language acquisition, literacy, language disorders, etc. to language and communication related problems in and between societies such as e.g. language variation and linguistic discrimination, multilingualism, language conflict, language policy and language planning.
AILA is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) enjoying Status B (mutual information and consultation) with UNESCO.
For everyone who takes a professional look at the subject of language training for business, Languages & Business 2008 offers a forum for the exchange of experiences, and the chance to get up-to-date with the matter. Selectively chosen experts will inform participants via practical workshops, up-to-the minute presentations and comprehensive plenary sessions about the benefits of foreign languages and intercultural communication skills for achieving success in business. In addition, the accompanying exhibition will allow both providers and users to come together in discussions, exchange ideas, and find relevant solutions for their individual requirements.

In this first international Symposium for Young Researchers on Educational Linguistics, we aim to discuss the concept of norms from different perspectives before the backdrop of cur-rent and innovative research concepts in linguistics, language teaching and the study of cul-ture. Norms and the related question of standards play a major role in the interplay of language, culture, society and education. The goal of this symposium is to describe, analyse and discuss the concept of norms on the basis of three topic areas:
* Language Policy as a Reflection of Cultural Norms * Norm, Standard, Deviation
* Target Norms in Foreign-Language Teaching
In each of the blocks, three young researchers from different academic backgrounds present their viewpoint on the concept of norms in a 15-minute position paper. There follows a ple-nary discussion about how the combination of theories and methods used in linguistics, teacher training and the study of culture can foster innovative research projects in Educational Linguistics. Each topic area is then rounded off by a plenary lecture from an internationally renowned scholar. The symposium closes with a panel discussion among the keynote speakers and associates of the Educational Linguistics research network at the University of Giessen.
Further current research projects from these and all other areas of Educational Linguistics can be presented as part of a poster session.
We are happy to welcome the following keynote speakers:
* Prof. Richard Hudson (London) * Prof. Frank Königs (Marburg)
* Prof. Bernard Spolsky (Ramat Gan)
The conference languages are English and German.
Please submit your abstract in English or German on our website:

AILA Applied Linguistics Series (AALS)
AILA Applied Linguistics Series (AALS) is a book series published under the editorial responsibility of AILA at John Benjamins, Amsterdam.
Third Party Publications
The International Journal of Applied Linguistics (InJAL) publishes articles that explore the relationship between expertise in linguistics, broadly defined, and the everyday experience of language. Its scope is international in that it welcomes articles which show explicitly how local issues of language use or learning exemplify more global concerns. AILA is looking for researchers interested in organizing Research Networks (ReN) focused on special topic areas of Applied Linguistics. If you would like to work internationally on your area of research together with other scholars from all over the world, you might consider applying to be a ReN organizer.
Research Networks (ReNs) seek to promote the gathering and dissemination of information and the undertaking of research in all academic areas of AILA with a particular focus on areas that have the potential for new cross-disciplinary research.
ReNs exist for three years and can be renewed. At any point in time, there will be about 15 ReNs in existence. Generally, the life of an ReN is not expected to be longer than six years. Renewals beyond the six years would be determined by the criteria listed below.
For the formation of an ReN, the following criteria should be met:
at least five members, some of whom should be new scholars,
multinational composition,
participants are active in the research area of the ReN,
a program for research activities for the three years between congresses and a commitment to present at the upcoming AILA World Congress,
nominate from among their members one individual as the organizer of the respective ReN who liases with the ReN Coordinator.

How to set up a ReN
For new applications, the ReN organizer must submit a proposal to the ReN Coordinator at least two months prior to the World Congress. The proposal should consist of
a statement concerning the scope of the ReN,
a list of the participants of the ReN and their affiliation,
a plan for ReN activities for the upcoming three years, and
a commitment to fill their ReN slot at the AILA Congress three years hence.
Each ReN organizer is responsible for a brief written report to the ReN Coordinator on an annual basis.
When possible, AILA will, upon written request, consider limited financial support for ReN activities.
Applications to set up a new ReN should be directed to the AILA ReN Coordinator.

How a former Scientific Commission (SC) can continue as a ReN
If a current Scientific Commision (SC) of AILA has been demonstrably active, it may continue its research as an ReN by meeting the criteria listed in the section above.
For continuation as a ReN, the presently designated SC convener and, in future, the ReN organizer must submit to the ReN Coordinator no more than two months following the World Congress a proposal which demonstrates an active research profile in the preceding three years. In addition, at the most recent AILA Congress, they must have filled their SC/ReN slot with presentations relating to the domain of their ReN/SC.
Specifically, the proposal should consist of:
evidence of past activities including a description of the session at the most recent AILA World Congress and a statement of evolving research interests of the ReN/existing SC,
a plan for ReN activities for the upcoming three years,
a list of the participants of the ReN and their affiliation,
a commitment to fill their ReN slot at the AILA Congress three years hence.
The decision for renewal will be based on fulfillment of the above criteria as determined by the ReN-Committee as defined in the Bylaws of AILA.
It will be the task of the ReN coordinator to notify the ReN organizers of the specific submission date for proposals to continue and the criteria for continuation.
ReN organizers will be notified of the decision no later than two months after the proposal submission deadline.
