The Symposium on Second Language Writing is an international conference that brings together teachers and researchers who work with second- and foreign-language writers to discuss important issues in the field of second language writing. The Symposium on Second Language Writing began in 1998 at Purdue University as a way to facilitate the advancement of knowledge in the field of L2 writing and to build a sense of community among those who are involved in L2 writing research and instruction.

The Conference "Language Issues in English-medium Universities: A Global Concern" will provide a forum to discuss and debate language issues in English-medium universities internationally. The participation of tertiary teachers, researchers, applied linguists and ELT professionals from all regions and contexts is welcome.
The Conference is co-hosted by the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Education in collaboration with the English Centre, The University of Hong Kong, and funded as part of the University's Strategic Research Theme on "Languages, Media and Communication: Language in Education and Assessment".

Main Objectives:
One theme that unites all those involved with language awareness, as researchers and/or practitioners, is engagement with language. The 9th International Conference of the Association for Language Awareness aims to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss and share research, theory and best practice relating to different aspects of engaging with language. The Conference will address language awareness in the learning and teaching of languages; in literature; and in broader educational, social, professional, and cultural dimensions. A particular aim of the 2008 ALA Conference is to promote language awareness research and practice within the region.

O I Simpósio sobre Ensino de Português para Falantes de Espanhol ocorreu em março de 2003, na University of Arizona, nos Estados Unidos. Em março de 2006, na Stanford University, ocorreu a segunda edição. O III Simpósio sobre Ensino de Português para Falantes de Espanhol está sendo organizado pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp), com a colaboração da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCAR), University of Arizona, Stanford University e Universidad de la República. A Comissão Organizadora reúne pesquisadores dessas universidades e tem a coordenação geral dos professores Matilde V. R. Scaramucci (presidente), Margarete Schlatter e Nelson Viana. O objetivo do encontro é dar continuidade aos debates na área de ensino e aprendizagem de português como língua estrangeira ou segunda língua e abrir novas oportunidades para a troca de idéias e construção conjunta de metodologias contemporâneas direcionadas a falantes de espanhol. Pelo fato de o evento estar sendo realizado no Brasil, esperamos contar com uma participação maior de pesquisadores e professores atuantes no Brasil e na América do Sul e, ao mesmo tempo, promover uma maior integração destes com aqueles que participaram dos dois primeiros eventos.

In this first international Symposium for Young Researchers on Educational Linguistics, we aim to discuss the concept of norms from different perspectives before the backdrop of cur-rent and innovative research concepts in linguistics, language teaching and the study of cul-ture. Norms and the related question of standards play a major role in the interplay of language, culture, society and education. The goal of this symposium is to describe, analyse and discuss the concept of norms on the basis of three topic areas:
* Language Policy as a Reflection of Cultural Norms * Norm, Standard, Deviation
* Target Norms in Foreign-Language Teaching
In each of the blocks, three young researchers from different academic backgrounds present their viewpoint on the concept of norms in a 15-minute position paper. There follows a ple-nary discussion about how the combination of theories and methods used in linguistics, teacher training and the study of culture can foster innovative research projects in Educational Linguistics. Each topic area is then rounded off by a plenary lecture from an internationally renowned scholar. The symposium closes with a panel discussion among the keynote speakers and associates of the Educational Linguistics research network at the University of Giessen.
Further current research projects from these and all other areas of Educational Linguistics can be presented as part of a poster session.
