IRAAL Online Lecture: Teaching Spoken Languages for Tourism through Project Work and Authentic Clips: A Pilot Study – AILA

Dr Gloria Cappelli & Dr Veronica Bonsignori

Online (organized by IRAAL)

Teaching LSP at university level necessarily involves both developing specialized language skills and forming knowledgeable professionals capable of appropriate and effective intercultural communication. This is especially true for foreign languages for tourism (e.g., English or French for Tourism). The distinctive feature of most instances of tourism discourse is the fact that it draws from a range of specialized domains. It mediates the tourist experience and contributes to closing the gap between the home- and the destination’s culture by making culture-specific knowledge and specialized concepts accessible to non-specialists. For this reason, teaching foreign languages for tourism communication involves simultaneously developing communicative and professional skills, as well as awareness of cultural differences and conventions. In this webinar, we discuss the potential of multimodal pedagogy in the English for Tourism classroom building on the idea that multimodality should be considered as an integral part of language proficiency rather than an addition. More specifically, focus is on the effects of using authentic multimodal materials (i.e., clips from authentic communicative exchanges) within task-based project work with young adult learners. This combination promotes the centrality of the learner offering opportunities for learning-by-doing, and helps learners expand their communicative proficiency and their awareness of specific professional communicative practices (Hyland 2005). At the same time, it avoids the limitations of the non-authenticity of the learning task, since the learners are asked to enact a type of spoken interaction which will likely be part of their professional practice in future.

GLORIA CAPPELLI is Associate Professor of English Language and Linguistics in the Department of Philology, Literature and Linguistics at the University of Pisa (Italy). She holds a PhD in Linguistics and Foreign Languages. Her research has focused on several areas of English linguistics, including semantics, pragmatics, English for Specific Purposes and English as a Foreign Language. She is the author of a book on English verbs of cognitive attitude (“I reckon I know how Leonardo da Vinci must have felt…” Epistemicity, evidentiality and English verbs of cognitive attitude), and of a book on the features of English tourism discourse (Sun, sea, sex and the unspoilt countryside. How the English language makes tourist out of readers). She has co-edited several collections of articles including volumes on lexical complexity, tourist guidebooks, complexity and creativity in the English Language and the linguistic study of dyslexia. On the same issues, she has published in national and international journals. Her most recent work has focused on meaning construal and conceptual accessibility, which she has examined in the processes of knowledge dissemination through tourism communication, as well as in pragmatic comprehension tasks in learners of English with and without dyslexia.

VERONICA BONSIGNORI is a Researcher in English Language and Linguistics at the University of Rome “Foro Italico”. She received a PhD in English Linguistics (2007) from the University of Pisa. Her interests are in the fields of pragmatics, audiovisual translation, multimodality, and ESP. She has published several articles in national and international journals and collections. She has also authored the monograph English Tags: A Close-up on Film Language, Dubbing and Conversation (2013) and co-edited with Belinda Crawford Camiciottoli the volume Multimodality Across Communicative Settings, Discourse Domains and Genres (2016). Her most recent publications include the paper “Using films and TV series for ESP teaching: A multimodal perspective” (System, 2018), “A multimodal analysis of spoken medical English in expert-to-expert interaction in TV programmes” (Ibérica, 2019), and with G. Cappelli “Specialized and culture-bound knowledge dissemination through spoken tourism discourse: Multimodal strategies in guided tours and documentaries” (Lingue e Linguaggi, 2020).

AILA pursues a strategy of regionalization that aims at establishing closer international cooperation among applied linguists from more or less neighbouring countries who are affiliated to AILA by fostering joint events, projects and publications in the respective regions. At the same time, AILA looks forward to more collaboration across networks and regions. One such event that has just been held is:
The webinar was an inter-regional collaboration between ALAA (Australia) and MAAL (Malaysia) with AILA Europe (coordinator).

AILA Europe has published a special issue of the European Journal of Applied Linguistics, Volume 10 Issue 2:Theme: New Generation of Applied Linguists in EuropeGuest Editors: Aleksandra Gnach and Gregory Miras
The issue has three sections:
  • Advancements in language teaching and learning
  • Embracing social responsibility through research
  • Understanding complex societal phenomena with linguistic methodology
Find out more about it here.
The AILA Applied Linguistics Series (AALS) covers different topics in applied linguistics from a multidisciplinary approach and aims to include different theoretical and methodological perspectives. As an official AILA publication, the series includes contributors from different geographical and linguistic backgrounds. The volumes in the series should be of high quality, break new ground and stimulate further research in Applied Linguistics.
AILA Review invites AILA members from all national affiliate organisations to submit proposals for future issues of AILA Review. AILA Review is the Scopus-indexed Journal that focuses on cutting-edge research by AILA research networks. It is published by John Benjamins, Amsterdam, and appears twice a year, once as a thematically oriented, guest-edited volume of 100-120 pages, and once as an open issue.

AILA Newsletter – August 2023

Welcome to the latest AILA newsletter. July was a busy month with the executive board and the international committee meetings attended by representatives of affiliates. These were followed by the 20th AILA World Congress held in beautiful Lyon on the university campuses.
Warm appreciation and heartfelt thanks to the organisers of this congress, in particular to the co-chairs Gregory Miras, Nathalie Blanc and Isabel Colon de Cavajal and their team, for their tireless dedication to ensuring that the congress was a success. Lyon was the first of the anniversary congresses celebrating 60 years of AILA. It also celebrated 60 years of AFLA, the French affiliate. AFLA has a special place in our history as it was created simultaneously with AILA, in Nancy, in 1964. Bernard Pottier was the first President of AILA from 1964 to 1969 and other founding members included Guy Capelle, Antoine Culioli, Henri Evrard, André Martinet and Paul Rivenc. Thank you too to the AILA Solidarity Awards Committee – in particular, Coordinator Kyria Finardi, Co-chair Gregory Miras and Treasurer Marlies Whitehouse (https://aila.info/about/solidarity_award).
The highlights of our celebration of 60 years of AILA are being held in innovative formats in three locations around the world. In 2021, we decided that in view of the changed circumstances brought about by the pandemic and the increase in affiliates, the anniversary congresses would be held in different regions. Each one would be hybrid, but they would nonetheless offer a rich programme with enhanced opportunities for members worldwide to participate.
For a report of the congress:
"The symbol was strong: Association Française de Linguistique Appliquée hosted the 20th anniversary congress of Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquée, marking the start of their joint anniversary, both founded in 1964 in Nancy (France). Aiming to respond to real contemporary problems, this congress emphasized a human scale, inclusion and sustainable development. The world is changing, and so must the way we do research. This is what the AILA 2023 congress sought to do, both in terms of content and form. The world is changing and we need to innovate to protect the future."

Co-chair, AILA 2023, Lyon

In terms of research and publications, AILA has two outlets, AILA Review and the AILA Applied Linguistics Book Series. AILA Review is the Scopus-indexed Journal focusing on cutting-edge research by research networks of AILA, the International Association of Applied Linguistics. See: https://aila.info/research/aila-review/invitation-for-proposals/
For those looking to propose book publications, the AILA Applied Linguistics Series (AALS) aims at representing the field in its diversity. As an official publication of AILA, the series include contributors from different geographical and linguistic backgrounds. See: https://aila.info/research/aila-book-series/
As we approach 60 years of AILA, it is appropriate to recall the founders of the Association and others who played a key role in AILA’s early days. In this newsletter, we remember Gerhard Nickel who was Secretary General for two terms, 1972 to 1975 and 1975 to 1978. In 1969, he founded the German Association of Applied Linguistics (GAL) and defined its goals over the many years when he served as President. Gerhard was editor-in-chief of the International Review of Applied Linguistics (IRAL). During his long term as a member of the Executive Board of AILA, he held advisory functions for educational policy institutions such as the COUNCIL OF EUROPE and UNESCO.
AILA’s ties with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) go back a long way. Recently, AILA endorsed the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) contributing to raising awareness of social issues among applied linguists. UNESCO leads the implementation of the International Decade of Indigenous languages 2022-2032. ‘The International Decade aims at ensuring indigenous peoples’ right to preserve, revitalize and promote their languages, and maintaining linguistic diversity and multilingualism aspects into the sustainable development efforts’. AILA Research Networks: Call for Applications for new ReNs – AILA

Deadline: 15 January, 2022

  1. Research Networks (ReNs) within AILA are formed for promoting research and disseminating their research findings inside and outside AILA. Each ReN focuses on a special topic area of Applied Linguistics that has the potential for new cross-disciplinary research.
  2. ReNs exist for three years and can be renewed. Generally, the life of a ReN is not expected to be longer than six years (https://aila.info/about/statutes_and_bylaws/bylaws/).

The criteria for ReNs includes:

  • a research area pertaining to applied linguistics;
  • participants who are active in the research area of the ReN;
  • at least five members, some of whom should be new scholars;
  • multinational composition with universities from at least three countries;
  • a commitment to fill a ReN symposium slot at the 2024 AILA Congress;

For applications (both renewals and new applications), the ReN convener must submit a proposal to the ReN Coordinator, Glenda El Gamal at . The proposal should consist of:

  • a statement concerning the scope of the ReN,
  • a list of the participants of the ReN and their affiliation,
  • a plan for ReN activities for the upcoming three years, and
  • a design for a ReN symposium at the 2024 AILA Congress in Kuala Lumpur

Applications to set up a ReN should be submitted by 15 January. Submissions should be sent to the AILA ReN Coordinator Glenda El Gamal at

AI in Education / (Dis)embodied interActIons Conference | Oct 24 – 25, 2024 | Nanterre, France | (CfP Submission Deadline: April 5, 2024) – AILA

AI IN EDUCATION / (DIS)EMBODIED INTERACTIONS
October 24-25, 2024 at the Université Paris Nanterre
(Nanterre, France)

Advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) are changing how languages are being taught and learned. Existing AI technologies can plan entire lessons for teachers and even provide realistic communication practice for learners; it is therefore important to analyze how these tools are being used and how they are shaping language learning experiences, and education in general.

This first international joint conference invites researchers from all over to join the discussion on this rapidly evolving field.  Specialists in a variety of fields, including but not to limited linguistics, education, communications, and public policy, are strongly encouraged to submit proposals.

*This conference is made possible thanks in large part to support (communications, organizational, and/or financial) provided by the Centre de Recherches Anglophones (CREA) at the Université Paris Nanterre, the Laboratoire Dimension Socio Pragmatique et Pragma Linguistique dans les Manuels Scolaires de Langues Etrangères en Algérie (DSPM) at the Université Abdelhamid Ibn Badis, and Associazione Nazionale Insegnanti Lingue Stranieri, particularly the ANILS Mondo network.

Assistant Professor of Multilingualism – LatinX Cluster – AILA

The University of Oregon’s Department of Linguistics invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in Linguistics, to begin in the fall of 2024. We seek candidates specializing in multilingualism addressed from a strengths-based multicompetence perspective. A successful candidate will have an established program of research on multilingualism/plurilingualism and second language learning or second language education. We are open to specializations in any subfield that is related to the analysis of multilingualism in the individual. We especially welcome candidates who specialize in the analysis of second language learning and teaching with a focus on the maintenance and/or revitalization of Indigenous languages of Latin America.

We particularly welcome applications from scholars who are members of Indigenous language communities or from other populations historically underrepresented in the academy, and/or whose life experience would contribute unique perspectives. Similarly, we seek applicants who will contribute to excellence in teaching students from diverse backgrounds at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

This position is one of six new tenure-track faculty positions being filled as part of the College of Arts and Sciences’ LatinX Cluster Hire (LCH). The LCH aims to increase faculty diversity, innovative research, and culturally relevant curriculum and mentorship through increased engagement and collaboration across the UO campus and in partnership with the Latinx Studies Program on issues of race and racism, access and equity, and social, cultural, and political debates pertinent to Chicanx, Latinx/e, and Latin American Studies. More information about the LCH can be found here: Tenure track Positions on Latinx Studies.
