AILA Review: Two Issues per Year, on Hot Topics in the Field – AILA %

AILA Review is the official scholarly journal of AILA, the International Association of Applied Linguistics. It publishes pioneering and state-of-the-art research done within AILA and the wider applied linguistics community.

From 2021 onwards, the AILA Review will be published twice a year, with one guest edited issue and one open issue. The new format will start with a guest-edited issue at the beginning of 2021. An open issue will follow in autumn 2021. All the new issues will be double-blind peer reviewed.

The 2021/1 issue (volume 34), on Developing shared languages: The fundamentals of mutual learning and problem solving in transdisciplinary collaboration, is guest-edited by Marlies Whitehouse, Henrik Rahm & Séverine Wozniak.

Survey: Adult ESOL Education: The State of the Field – AILA

Calling all adult ESOL teachers and program administrators- make your voice heard!

We are excited to announce a new and important research survey centered on the experiences of adult English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teachers and program administrators.

We invite all ESOL practitioners and colleagues to participate in a voluntary research survey that will collect data for an intersection panel discussion titled ‘Adult ESOL Education: The State of the Field’ at TESOL International’s 2023 convention, and which will potentially inform a written research report.

In our field, we are missing data that reflects the programmatic details and the experiences/perspectives of adult ESOL practitioners in the field. Administrators and teachers lack a comprehensive view of adult ESOL, and we hope to help change that with this survey.

We ask for a bit of your time to help close that gap, and to glean critically important information that can help push our field forward.

This survey is open to adult ESOL educators and adult ESOL program administrators worldwide, regardless of membership or affiliation with TESOL International. A link to the survey is below. Please share out to your networks!

NB For the purposes of this research survey, we identify adult English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programming as instructional programming for students with all the following characteristics:
English-language learners aged out of high school / secondary level (ISCED Levels 2-3) schooling. are legally considered adults (in the United States, 18+)

are not solely motivated by for-credit coursework or academic degree attainment.

The dynamics of language, communication and culture in a changing world – AILA

AILA World Congress | Groningen | August 9–14, 2020 | The dynamics of language, communication and culture in a changing world

Symposium: Research Network Financial Communication
Communicating figures with the language of numbers

Convenors

Marlies Whitehouse, Zurich University of Applied Sciences,

Alexander Laskin, Quinnipiac University,

Symposium abstract

Successful communication of figures is key in finance and, thus, affects us all. In our symposium, we intend to contribute to an enhanced understanding of the pivotal role that language and communication play in the financial sector and in society-at-large. Key research questions include which communication strategies the stakeholders use, why they make their decisions as they do, and how the resulting practices are received in public discourse. By creating the opportunity for close interdisciplinary dialogue between complementary disciplines, the symposium aims at developing a common agenda of joint research on communication in finance as a key to an economically shaped world.

In our symposium, we address theoretical, methodological, and practical challenges of investigating the intertextual and interdiscursive dynamics and linguistic strategies at the interface of verbal, visual, and numerical languages and their macro-structural context. Research frameworks combine innovative questions with inter- and transdisciplinary approaches (Laskin, 2017; Palmieri, Perrin, Whitehouse, 2018) that enable researchers to capture and understand the field’s complexity and dynamics. Methods and methodologies emanate from or are combined from e.g. text analysis, genre analysis, multimodal genre analysis, critical genre analysis, discourse analysis, critical discourse analysis, corpus analysis and writing research.

Description Research Network of Financial Communication

The AILA Research Network (ReN) of Financial Communication brings together applied linguists who investigate the interplay between text production, markets, and changes in the domain of finance in general and financial communication and literacy in particular. In order to obtain deeper insights into this multi-dimensional research field, we are interested in establishing both spontaneous and stable institutionalized connections between scholars who address the highly complex and dynamic interplay of language use in organizations, domains such as economics and politics, as well as society-at-large.

ReN: English as a Medium of Education Archives – AILA

Convenors:

  • Paola GAMBOA, Sorbonne Nouvelle, France, AFLA
  • Claire KRAMSCH, USA, AAAL

Scope:

The scope of this AILA Research Network RECAL - Research & Educational Cultures in Applied Linguistics, is to examine the cultural, political, epistemological and methodological diversity of applied linguistics research in various countries; as well as the diversity of institutional conditions in which the research is conducted.

Adopting an interdisciplinary approach (applied linguistics, educational sciences, sociology), research in this ReN focuses on:

  1. Scientific culture. In order to know, how theories from Global North and Global South countries have been received, interpreted and put into practice in different countries with different intellectual, scientific and educational traditions.
  2. Educational culture. Education systems, history and heritage. Coloniality and decolonial perspectives.
  3. Editorial culture. To determine the opportunities and constraints of publishing in English. In particular, how to publish in English without losing the conceptual, epistemological and pedagogical specificity of a research often conceived in a language different from English.
  4. Didactic and pedagogical cultures. To find out, what are the socio-political bases, realities and constraints in language teaching and learning (bilingualism / multilingualism / plurilingualism) in different education systems.
  5. Pre-service and In-service teacher’s development. To understand the difficulties researchers and teachers have to face in order to adapt diversity policies into inclusive practices, but also to what extent they have been trained to reflect on identifying problems of diversity and inclusion.

This REN wants to feature both research and educational projects showing the challenges to overcome in:

  • analyzing, understanding and questioning the colonial heritage, the systemic coloniality and the decolonial needs.
  • adopting transnational (such UNESCO) and national (specific to a country) policies and guidelines to implement diversity and inclusion.
  • promoting language value (equality and equity), maintenance or revitalization.
  • implementing appropriate working conditions for researchers and teachers in order to meet the learners’ needs.

This REN welcomes projects describing the challenges mentioned above, but also the designing of educational solutions representative of social challenges, connecting classrooms with life experiences and recognizing the experiences and abilities of every student, in particular, those historically marginalized.

REN RECAL EDITED VOLUME

As organizers of the 2021 ReCAL symposium Claire KRAMSCH (Emerita Professor at Berkeley University), Harold CASTEÑEDA (PhD Professor at Universidad Distritital Francisco José de Caldas) and Paola GAMBOA (PhD Lecturer at Sorbonne Nouvelle University) have decided to coordinate a volume on the decolonization of research in applied linguistics in Latin America. In this volume, researchers from Colombia, Argentina, Brazil and the United States of America, were invited to report on their work, adopting as much as possible a reflexive stance, but also to offer a critical analysis of their efforts to decolonize their research projects. In particular, they would analyze, using Spanish or Portuguese and English, their own locus of enunciation / lugar de enunciación / lugar de fala.

The 62nd JACET International Convention (29-31 August 2023, Tokyo) – AILA

We are pleased to announce the convention registration is now open. Click here.

The 62nd JACET International Convention (Tokyo, 2023)

Dates: August 29th (Tue.) – August 31st (Thu.), 2023

Venue: Meiji University

Theme: Reframing Collaboration in Language Education and Beyond

Overview:

At the 52nd International JACET Convention held at Kyoto University in 2013, based on the theme of “Collaboration and Relativization in English Language Education,” participants discussed not only how to create collaborative relationships with colleagues in related fields such as educational technology and the teaching of foreign languages other than English, but also how to work together with colleagues in other English language education societies in Japan. Ten years have passed since then and the circumstances surrounding research and practice in English education have changed much more than we could have imagined. We believe that to ensure we can surmount sudden changes in the field of English language education in the future, we must revisit the fundamentals of language education and consider anew the direction we think language education should take. In addition, to connect with future generations, we believe we must not only reaffirm our cooperation with those in the field of language education proper, but also with those in fields of study related to education. At this year’s conference we wish to discuss new possibilities for the future of language education under the theme, “Reconstruction and Development of Collaboration in Language Education.”

in Past Events / ReN: English as a Medium of Education

The AILA Research Networks (ReNs) are enshrined in the statutes and by-laws of the Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquée - AILA as a lever for  promoting research on burning issues in applied linguistics arising from real-world problems.

Although the statutes specify a number of 15 ReNs for periods of 3 years, the wording was changed in 2012 to allow greater flexibility according to needs. For the previous period 2021-23, there were 20 ReNs plus a special ReCAL on Research Cultures in Applied Linguistics. During this special period, ReN convenors had the opportunity to organise symposia at the two jubilee congresses, AILA 2023 (Lyon, FRANCE) and AILA 2024 (Kuala Lumpur, MALAYSIA).

With the return to a three-year cycle, the call for ReNs for the period 2024-27 has focused on finding a balance between renewing ReNs that have demonstrated their impact on the scientific field and allowing new ones to emerge. The idea is to come close to the numbers of ReNs set out in the By-laws, while at the same time proposing a framework that will allow us to build on existing promotional tools (for example, the publication of news in the International Journal of Applied Linguistics) and also to propose new formats (a focus in the President's Newsletter).

The call for proposals was sent out on 9 September, with a deadline of 13 October 24, and projects could be submitted until 16 October, in accordance to the AILA statutes, which stipulate a deadline for submissions up to two months after the end of the AILA Congress, which took place from 11 to 16 August 2024. The submission consisted of filling in a template describing the ReN project.

The ReN Committee is made up of 4 members, one of whom is a member of the Executive Committee and three of whom are members of the International Committee:

  • Prof. Dr. María Luisa Carrió-Pastor, Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain
  • Dr. Anitha Devi Pillai, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
  • Dr. Doris Cristina Vicente da Silva Matos, Universidade Federal de Sergipe, Brazil
  • Dr. Caroline Tagg, The Open University, United Kingdom

The Committee met on 19 November 24 to consider each application according to the following criteria, as defined in the AILA by-laws:

  • at least 5 members
  • at least 1 new scholar
  • international team
  • produce a report on the previous year for renewals

but also on items such as :

  • the contribution of the topic to applied linguistics
  • a clear work programme for the period in question
  • the strategic dimension of the theme for Applied Linguistics

In the end, 16 ReN proposals were accepted including 4 new projects and 12 renewals. They all present the diversity of approaches in applied linguistics.

International Symposium on Bilingualism 14
– Diversity Now –

Now Accepting Abstract Submissions

The 14th International Symposium on Bilingualism will take place on 26-30 June 2023 at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia.

The theme of the conference is Diversity Now. The United Nations General Assembly has declared the period between 2022 and 2032 as the International Decade of Indigenous Languages to draw attention to the critical status of many Indigenous languages across the world and to encourage action for their preservation, revitalisation, and promotion. ISB14 especially encourages submissions of work involving lesser-studied bilingual communities and interdisciplinary work examining bilingualism across cultures, societies, and the life-span.

ISB14 invites submissions in all areas of research on bilingualism and multilingualism, including but not limited to: linguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, applied linguistics, neuropsychology, language acquisition, clinical linguistics, language and education, and multilingual societies.

Keynote speakers include:

  • Christos Pliatsikas (Centre for Literacy and Multilingualism, School of Psychological and Clinical Language Science, University of Reading)
  • Ingrid Piller (Centre for Workforce Futures, Department of Linguistics, Macquarie University)
  • Kevin Kien Hoa Chung (Department of Early Childhood Education, The Education University of Hong Kong)
  • Kilian Seeber (Faculty of Translation and Interpreting, University of Geneva)
  • Leher Singh (Department of Psychology, National University of Singapore)
  • Ofelia Garcia (Urban Education and Latin American, Iberian, and Latino Cultures, City University of New York)
  • Sharynne McLeod (School of Education, Charles Sturt University)

We invite abstracts for two categories of submissions: individual papers and posters.

Individual papers are formal presentations on original research or pedagogy-focused topics by one or more authors, lasting a maximum of 20 minutes with 5 additional minutes for discussion.

Posters on original research or pedagogy will be displayed in sessions that offer the opportunity for individualised, informal discussion with others in the field. Posters are especially effective for presenting work-in-progress, fieldwork, and results of empirical research for which data can be presented visually. Posters will be available throughout an entire day of the conference with presenters in attendance for a 90-minute poster session.

Abstract submission is now open and will end on 30 November 2022.

Abstracts should be a maximum of 300 words in length, anonymised and submitted in English via the submission portal https://app.oxfordabstracts.com/stages/3999/submitter.

Abstracts will be reviewed anonymously. Notification of acceptance will be sent by 28 February 2023.

Enquiries regarding the academic content of submissions should be addressed to the ISB14 Scientific Committee via . For general inquiries about the conference please email the Organisational Committee at .

in featured stories / Research The call for AILA Research Networks (ReN) for the period 2024-27 is now open. You will find below a reminder of the by-laws and statutes of AILA as well as the procedure for this year. Feel free to share the call with the members of your national AILA affiliate.

ReN scope:

  1. Research Networks (ReNs) within AILA are formed for promoting research and disseminating their research findings inside and outside AILA. Each ReN focuses on a special topic area of Applied Linguistics that has the potential for new cross-disciplinary research.
  2. ReNs exist for three years and can be renewed. Generally, the life of a ReN is not expected to be longer than six years (https://aila.info/about/statutes_and_bylaws/bylaws/) while not being a blocking factor for more than one renewal.

The criteria for ReNs include:

  • a research area pertaining to applied linguistics;
  • participants who are active in the research area of the ReN;
  • at least five members, some of whom should be new scholars;
  • multinational composition with universities from at least three countries;
  • a commitment to fill a ReN symposium slot at the 2027 AILA Congress (Vancouver, Canada);
  • a report of the activities of the last three years if your ReN is seeking renewal;

Starting from 2021: Online Program Layer at AILA World Congresses – AILA

In addition to the traditional symposium format, future AILA World Congresses will include an online program layer for remote attendance. This supplement benefits all AILA members who are not able or willing to travel but who would like to attend parts of the AILA World Congress. The online layer offers topics and formats that can easily be discussed in remote meetings. It does not replace standard formats and presentations, which have to be given by presenters participating in person in the World Congress. The new layer will debut at the AILA World Congress 2021, which was shifted from 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

International Mother Language Day – 21 February 2022 – AILA

The idea to celebrate International Mother Language Day was the initiative of Bangladesh. It was approved at the 1999 UNESCO General Conference and has been observed throughout the world since 2000.

UNESCO believes in the importance of cultural and linguistic diversity for sustainable societies. It is within its mandate for peace that it works to preserve the differences in cultures and languages that foster tolerance and respect for others.

Linguistic diversity(link is external) is increasingly threatened as more and more languages disappear. Globally 40 per cent of the population does not have access to an education in a language they speak or understand. Nevertheless, progress is being made in mother tongue-based multilingual education with growing understanding of its importance, particularly in early schooling, and more commitment to its development in public life.

Multilingual and multicultural societies exist through their languages which transmit and preserve traditional knowledge and cultures in a sustainable way.

2022 CELEBRATIONS

The theme of the 2022 International Mother Language Day, “Using technology for multilingual learning: Challenges and opportunities”, will discuss the potential role of technology to advance multilingual education and support the development of quality teaching and learning for all.

UNESCO organizes a webinar on 21 February from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, Paris time) to celebrate Mother Language Day 2022:

English as a Medium of Education, Multilingualism and Virtual Exchange: Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

Convenors:

  • Marina ORSINI-JONES, Coventry University, UK, BAAL.
  • Mirjam HAUCK, The Open University, UK, BAAL.
  • Luciana Cabrini SIMOES CALVO, Universidade Estadual de Maringá (UEM), Brazil, ALAB.
  • Carlos Alberto HILDEBLANDO JUNIOR, Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (UFES) and Coventry University (COvUni), Brazil, ALAB.

Scope:

This REN aims to address  equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) issues in research related to language education with a focus on English as Medium of Education (EME) - Instruction (EMI) - multilingualism and Virtual Exchange (VE). Research in EMEVEDI redresses some of the inequalities in terms of participation in global conversations about language education to stimulate a debate on emerging ecologies of knowledge in Applied Linguistics. We aim to explore new places and spaces where Applied Linguistics can foster EDI in multilingual approaches and contexts, provide pluralistic perspectives on language learning and teaching, open up ways of addressing digital divides and  decolonise the language education curriculum. Work in this REN aims to identify, interrogate and interrupt the legacy of coloniality in language theory and praxis while also exploring the potential of digital tools to support transformative experiences in language education.

We have started to frame a symposium on “Languages for Peace Education” for AILA 2027 in Vancouver in the light of the increasing number of global crises humanity is currently facing. We will demonstrate how all dimensions of the EMEVEDI REN - EME, Multilingualism and VE - are core to promoting broader societal compassion and understanding within an  EDI framework. The symposium will highlight the importance of EME, Multilingualism and VE for Global Citizenship Education (CGE) that expands peacebuilding efforts beyond local conflicts and  encourages students and academics in Applied Linguistics to take a critical approach to their role in a global context.  The proposed symposium in Vancouver is aligned with SDG 16 and speaks to the Pedagogies of Peace agenda highlighted in the 2024 Innovating Pedagogy report.

  • Symposium papers presented at AILA 2024 in KL and Special Issue AILA REVIEW stemming from the symposium:

Aligned with the AILA 2024 congress theme, the symposium organized in Kuala Lumpur aimed to frame issues of diversity, inclusion and sustainability (DIS) in relation to the roles of languages and technologies in education, research and linguistically-related action/policy. We brought together researchers and practitioners with diverse roles and positionalities in education, policy and knowledge production to discuss implications of the use of English as a medium of education (EME) and as

the global language of research communication as well as to interrogate its role in relation to an ecology of knowledges and languages to decolonize language education. While the issues of diversity and inclusion are both familiar and central to our work in the ReN, the AILA 2024 symposium was a great opportunity to take stock of our understanding and commitments to them in practice while  also making room for novel discussions around sustainability’. Both the REN and the  In order to stay fully committed to the DIS agenda of the AILA 2024 Congress, we invited proposals from members of our network with diverse linguistic, geo-cultural, ethnic and  disciplinary backgrounds as well as diverse roles in teaching, research and policy/action. Fifteen papers were presented for this symposium. Fifteen papers from all continents were presented. International Symposium on Bilingualism 14 – Diversity Now (26-30 June 2023 – Sydney, Australia) – AILA

International Symposium on Bilingualism (ISB) is a biennial conference on a wide range of issues concerning bi/multilingualism. Since its inaugural conference in 1997 at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, ISB has become the most significant conference in the field of bi/multilingualism. ISB has a strong focus on showcasing multidisciplinary research with a representation from a range of disciplines at every conference, including education, linguistics, neuroscience, psychology and sociology. The aim of ISB is to bring together bi/multilingualism researchers from all around the globe to advance the theoretical and applied research in bi/multilingualism, and to support bi/multilingualism practices in the community.

The conference theme of ISB14 is Diversity Now.

The United Nations General Assembly has declared the period between 2022 and 2032 as the International Decade of Indigenous Languages to draw attention to the critical status of many Indigenous languages across the world and encourage action for their preservation, revitalisation, and promotion. As we move into this decade, ISB14 encourages work especially involving lesser studied bilingual communities and interdisciplinary work to tackle bilingualism across the life-span, cultures and societies.
