AILA Europe’s strategic partnership with the Council of Europe – AILA

At the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, AILA serves in an advisory and participatory capacity when called upon concerning issues where a general applied linguistics perspective is considered valuable. For example, AILA played a key role when the European Centre for Modern Languages of the Council of Europe (ECML) established its multi-institutional Professional Network Forum in 2009. Another example of AILA’s direct involvement is a Launching Conference on „Building Inclusive Societies through Enriching Plurilingual and Pluricultural Education“ in May 2018.

ALLT 2023 – Conference Brief – AILA

The 5th Applied Linguistics and Language Teaching International Conference and Exhibition (ALLT 2023) was held over three days,  03-05 March 2023 in Zayed University Dubai Campus, United Arab Emirates (UAE) under the theme Innovation, diversity and inclusivity in Applied Linguistics and language education. The Conference aimed at enhancing the professional and knowledge levels of ALLT members through achieving the following objectives:

  • Exchange knowledge and experiences and discuss mechanisms of elevating the performance level of Applied Linguistics, language educators and professionals in relevant fields of disciplines.
  • Present latest modern technologies and leading practices of the fields of English teaching and Applied Linguistics.
  • Highlight the importance of scientific research conducted by the applied linguists and enhance the overall performance of English teachers

Up to 200 delegates attended the conference from the Arab Gulf States and beyond. The event featured four Keynote speakers from the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, and Australia. It included more than 100 sessions in English including oral presentations, workshops and symposium sessions, in addition to 25 presentations delivered in Arabic. The sessions were on 14 strands, and the most common were the bilingualism and multilingualism and classroom- based research and researched-based teaching strands. ALLT 2023 presenters came from 40 countries, most of which are from the UAE, the host country (n=72 participants) followed by Saudi Arabia (n=27), then Algeria, United Kingdom (UK), the United States (US) and Bangladesh (n=9 from each of these countries).

ALLT 2023 featured the participation of seven regional and international exhibitors who introduced there most recent tools, products, and publications on material which the delegates could benefit from in research and language teaching. The conference offered more than five closed and special training sessions by the invited keynotes speakers and experts on topics relevant to the conference theme and linked with: teaching languages to students of determination; innovative language teaching through ChatGPT, and publications on Applied Linguistics: process, evaluation and traps.

ALLT this year continued to organize the Young Narrator Competition (الراوي الصغير 2023) where up to 100 children between the age of four and nine across the UAE participated in narrating a story written by themselves in Standard Arabic. The competition was judged by four scholars in Arabic language. The celebration of the young narrator was held on the third day of the conference with the presence of the winners’ and participants’ parents.

Recent events and publications

In November 2019 Network member Sari Pöyhönen led a seminar at the University of Jyväskylä which was co-produced by the Research Collegium for Language in Changing Society (Reclas, https://www.jyu.fi/reclas/en), Crossing Borders – Artistic Practices in Performing and Narrating Belonging (www.croboarts.org) and AILA Research Network Creative Inquiry in Applied Linguistics. The exploratory seminar brought together researchers and artists who are engaging with arts-based methods for researching and understanding language and communication. I also offered insights into language issues for people who might be marginalized or othered. The seminar included a number of network members and the Visual Representations of Multilingualism exhibition.

Network co-convenor Jessica Bradley presented the Multilingual Streets: Translating and Curating the Linguistic Landscape project at the Universitat Autònoma Barcelona in January 2020, including a creative methods workshop using zineing to explore embodied experiences of the linguistic landscape.

The international research network Communicating the Unsayable: Learning at the Intersection of Language and the Arts (LILA), led by Lou Harvey, Emilee Moore, and Cristina Aliagas (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) had its first network event on 6th February 2020 at Leeds Central Library. The network brings together a variety of participants to consider the relationship between language and the creative arts for learning through four events themed around Making, Wellbeing, Engaging, and Belonging, and partners with Leeds Libraries, Pudsey Wellbeing Charity (West Yorkshire, UK), The British Museum (London), and Museu de Lleida (Catalonia). The first event saw 30 academics, artists and community organisations discuss the question How is material translated between different linguistic and artistic/aesthetic forms in processes of artistic making?

Local Voices, Global Impact: Examining the role of English in Multilingual and Multicultural Contexts of the Global South – AILA

We are pleased to invite researchers, educators, and advocates to contribute chapters to an upcoming edited volume titled “Local Voices, Global Impact: Examining the role of English in Multilingual and Multicultural Contexts of the Global South”, for submission as an edited volume to Routledge. This volume is edited by Dr. Mona Nishizaki (University of Genoa), Dr. Rafael Timmermann (Federal University of Pará), and Prof. Dr. Kyria Finardi (Federal University of Espírito Santo) and aims to identify, interrogate and hopefully interrupt the ongoing legacies of colonialism that continue to shape education systems across the Global South, with particular focus on whose knowledge, experiences, and perspectives are centered and whose are marginalized. At the same time, as we observe a growth in English Medium Instruction (EMI) as the internationalization of higher education accelerates, we seek to highlight how the Global South can carve its own place in this evolving landscape while promoting multilingualism in situated, decolonized educational practices. This book will showcase local voices and experiences that connect to global trends, emphasizing the importance of multilingualism and decolonization in shaping  more inclusive and equitable educational futures. We welcome contributions that explore both theoretical frameworks and practical approaches from diverse contexts within the Global South. Submissions may include but are not limited to:

Original research studies

Conceptual/theoretical papers

Case studies of best practices

Policy analyses

Reflections on grassroots initiatives

We are particularly interested in chapters addressing one or more of the following broad themes:

Decolonizing Education: Reclaiming Knowledge and Epistemologies in the Global South

Multilingualism and Linguistic Justice in Postcolonial Contexts

English as a Global Language: Opportunities and Challenges for the Global South

Navigating Globalization: The Global South in the Internationalized Higher Education Landscape

Pedagogical Innovations: Bridging Local and Global Contexts in Multilingual Classrooms

Language, Power, and Identity in Higher Education: Whose Voices Are Heard?

Policy, Equity, and Access in Education in and for  the Global South

English Medium Instruction (EMI) and Its Impact on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Grassroots Educational Movements: possibilities and challenges for Local Voices and Global Advocacy

Technology in Education: exploring affordances and challenges in a Multilingual-Interconnected  World

We invite contributions that critically engage with these topics from local perspectives, emphasizing the ways in which educational practices in the Global South can influence and reshape global discourses. Contributors are encouraged to provide contextually grounded insights that reflect the realities of multilingualism, colonial legacies, and the push for decolonization in educational settings.

National Poetry Day – ALTI – AILA

National Poetry Day is a moment to celebrate the beauty of language through literary works. As researchers and practitioners of applied linguistics, we can appreciate poetry as a form of application of various linguistic aspects, from language structure to the power of expression. Through linguistic analysis, we can understand how words are chosen , rhythm, and style create a profound aesthetic experience for readers. Today, let us celebrate the richness of language and the beauty of poetry as a source of inspiration for more meaningful applied linguistic research and practice.

3rd Swiss Conference on Barrier-free Communication – AILA

Zurich University of Applied Sciences, Winterthur, Switzerland

June 29 – July 4, 2020

https://www.zhaw.ch/en/linguistics/research/conference-on-barrier-free-communication/

New! Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, the conference has been rescheduled to 29 June – 4 July 2020 and will be held online. In this way, the BfC 2020 Organising Committee aims to actively respond to the current emergency situation, as well as to explore more innovative ways to reach out to the barrier-free communication academic and professional community worldwide.

1. About the conference

This is the third and final conference being held as part of the project entitled “Proposal and implementation of a Swiss research centre for barrier-free communication” (2017-2020), the main goal of which is to ensure access to higher education for people with visual, hearing or temporary cognitive impairments. The project, which is a cooperation between the Institute of Translation and Interpreting of the ZHAW and the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting of the University of Geneva, is funded by the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) and is supported by the Swiss University Conference.

The 1st Swiss Conference on Barrier-free Communication was held on 15-16 September 2017 in Winterthur, Switzerland. It aimed to offer both a theoretical and an empirical perspective on the state of the art in the field (cf. BfC 2017 Proceedings). One year later, the second edition of the conference, which took place in Geneva, Switzerland, on 9-10 November 2018, further explored accessibility in educational settings (cf. BfC 2018 Proceedings).

Building on the 2017 and 2018 events, the 2020 conference sets out to provide a wider international forum to discuss most recent progress and future challenges in barrier-free communication. The conference will be centred on all aspects of the field, focusing in particular on novel research findings and emerging disciplines.

Researchers, academics and practitioners from 15 different countries will present 42 papers related to the following topics:

  • Audio Description and Audio Introduction
  • Easy-to-read and Plain Language
  • Live-subtitling via keyboard and Respeaking
  • Web Accessibility
  • Sign Language
  • Community Interpreting
2. Registration

Registration is now open and will close on 22 June 2020. Please note that, due to the recent change in conference delivery format, registration fees have been reduced. You can find relevant information on the registration webpage.

3. Language accessibility

The conference language will be English. Closed captions in English will be provided for each pre-recorded video. Given the change in delivery mode, this virtual conference aims to reach out to a wider and more international audience. As we strive to meet the needs of as many sign language users as possible, all conference presentations will be interpreted in International Sign.

This conference is co-sponsored by the Swiss Association for Applied Linguistics (VALS-ASLA).

For more information, please visit the official Conference website.

International Symposium on Bilingualism 14
– Diversity Now –

Now Accepting Abstract Submissions

The 14th International Symposium on Bilingualism will take place on 26-30 June 2023 at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia.

The theme of the conference is Diversity Now. The United Nations General Assembly has declared the period between 2022 and 2032 as the International Decade of Indigenous Languages to draw attention to the critical status of many Indigenous languages across the world and to encourage action for their preservation, revitalisation, and promotion. ISB14 especially encourages submissions of work involving lesser-studied bilingual communities and interdisciplinary work examining bilingualism across cultures, societies, and the life-span.

ISB14 invites submissions in all areas of research on bilingualism and multilingualism, including but not limited to: linguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, applied linguistics, neuropsychology, language acquisition, clinical linguistics, language and education, and multilingual societies.

Keynote speakers include:

  • Christos Pliatsikas (Centre for Literacy and Multilingualism, School of Psychological and Clinical Language Science, University of Reading)
  • Ingrid Piller (Centre for Workforce Futures, Department of Linguistics, Macquarie University)
  • Kevin Kien Hoa Chung (Department of Early Childhood Education, The Education University of Hong Kong)

We invite abstracts for two categories of submissions: individual papers and posters.

Individual papers are formal presentations on original research or pedagogy-focused topics by one or more authors, lasting a maximum of 20 minutes with 5 additional minutes for discussion.

Posters on original research or pedagogy will be displayed in sessions that offer the opportunity for individualised, informal discussion with others in the field. Posters are especially effective for presenting work-in-progress, fieldwork, and results of empirical research for which data can be presented visually. Posters will be available throughout an entire day of the conference with presenters in attendance for a 90-minute poster session.

Abstract submission is now open and will end on 30 November 2022.

Abstracts should be a maximum of 300 words in length, anonymised and submitted in English via the submission portal https://app.oxfordabstracts.com/stages/3999/submitter.

Abstracts will be reviewed anonymously. Notification of acceptance will be sent by 28 February 2023.

Application for Grants – AILA

AILA Solidarity Awards are for scholars whose papers are accepted for presentation at an AILA World Congress, but who are from parts of the world where economies make it difficult, if not prohibitive, for travel to the conference. These individuals are the future of our profession and will be the leaders in Applied Linguistics in their countries.

Each AILA World Congress has its own system and guidelines for application. To apply for a Solidarity Award for the 2024 World Congress in Kuala Lumpur, please follow instructions on the Congress website: https://aila2024.com/aila-solidarity-awards/#toggle-id-3

AILA Research Networks – AILA

AILA is looking for researchers interested in organizing Research Networks (ReN) focused on special topic areas of Applied Linguistics. If you would like to work internationally on your area of research together with other scholars from all over theworld, you might consider applying to be a ReN organizer.

Prof. Dr. Grégory Miras
Research Networks Coordinator

Research Networks (ReNs) seek to promote research and its dissemination in all academic areas of AILA, with a particular focus on areas that have the potential for new cross-disciplinary research.

ReNs exist for three years and can be renewed. At any point in time, there will be about 15 ReNs in existence. Reapplications are required every three years by the criteria listed below:

  • at least five members, some of whom should be new scholars,
  • multinational composition with universities from at least three countries,
  • participants are active in the research area of the ReN pertaining to applied linguistics,
  • a program for research activities for the three years between congresses, including a commitment to present a symposium at the upcoming AILA World Congress and an organizer (one of the members) who liases with the ReN Coordinator.

For applications, the ReN organizer must submit a proposal to the ReN Coordinator. The deadline for submission is two months after the World Congress. The proposal should consist of

  • a statement concerning the scope of the ReN,
  • a list of the participants of the ReN and their affiliation,
  • a plan for ReN activities for the upcoming three years, and
  • a commitment to fill their ReN symposium slot at the AILA Congress three years hence.

Each ReN organizer is responsible for a brief written report to the ReN Coordinator every three years (2 months after the congress).

Applications to set up a ReN should be directed to the AILA ReN Coordinator and the decision on the acceptance of the proposal will be notified to the ReN organizers no later than two months after the proposal submission deadline.
