AILA :: About :: Solidarity Funds

  • Goals
  • Fund raising Plan
  • Pledge Form

The goal of the Solidarity Award Fund (SAF) is to raise an endowment fund to support scholars to attend AILA meetings (held every three years). These awards are for scholars whose papers are accepted for presentation at the conference, but who are from parts of the world where economies make it difficult, if not prohibitive, for them to travel to the conference. These individuals are the future of our profession and will be the leaders in Applied Linguistics in their countries. The goal of $50,000 for this fundraising campaign would provide funds for this purpose. Actual fund-raising will continue up until the 2008 AILA Congress in Essen.

page top

Fund-Raising Plan

SAF giving will be solicited in five recognized categories. In all instances gifts can be made in a single contribution or as a pledge over three years.

1. Foundation Donors:

Individuals, groups, and organizations that donate a minimum of $1,000 will be recognized as providing major gifts for the fund. These gifts will be mentioned in all publicity announcements for the fund (through the end of fund-raising campaign) and on the AILA website.

2. Scholarship Donors:

Individuals, groups, and organizations that donate a minimum of $800 will also be recognized in all publicity announcements for the fund (through the end of fund-raising campaign) and on the AILA website.

3. Charter Donors:

Individuals, groups, and organizations that donate a minimum of $500 will also be recognized in all publicity announcements for the fund (through the end of fund-raising campaign) and on the AILA website.

4. Honoraria Donors:

Individuals in this category provide honoraria they have received for the purposes of the endowment fund ($200 minimum, without specific amount noted). These individuals will be recognized during the 12 month period following receipt of their honoraria gift.

5. Fund Donors:

Individuals responding to the fund raising request will be listed in the next issue of AILA News and at the next Congress. (Standard donations amounts include $150, $100, $75, $50, $35, $25; Student donation amounts of $20, $15, and $ 10 will also be accepted and recognized). Of course, any donation of any size will be appreciated.

6. Special Gift Donors:

Any individual, group, or organization wishing to consider a special gift well beyond the categories noted above will be given special recognition. Interest in making a special gift can be discussed with Karlfried Knapp (AILA Secretary-General) or Susan Gass (AILA President).

AILA :: Publications :: Guidelines for Contributors

  • All manuscripts should be addressed to the editors of the respective volume of AILA Review. All submission letters must specify that the manuscript submitted is not under consideration elsewhere and has not been published elsewhere in this or a substantially similar form.
  • Contributions should be in English. If not written by a native speaker, it is advisable to have the paper checked by a native speaker.
  • No page other than the cover pages should give the author's name. The review of the manuscript will be anonymous.
  • Submit four double-spaced printed copies (preferably 12-point font) in conformance to the style as described in the unabridged submission guidelines for Eurosla proceedings. The length of the manuscript should not exceed 10.000 words. Include author name, title, full mailing address, e-mail address and telephone numbers.
  • An abstract both in English and French should be included. This should not exceed 200 words.
  • For the delivery of the final version, the article should be presented on disk and saved on IBM-PC compatible or Mac disk. Material should be saved in ASCII mode or 'non-document' mode, or 'text-only' mode. It should also be saved as a separate file in the author's normal word-processor format together with a note indicating the name of the word processor used. The format of the disk (PC or Mac) should also be labeled on the disk. An identical hard copy of the manuscript should be included.
  • References in text should be according the style as described in the unabridged submission guidelines for AILA Review.
  • Sample references:
    • Blackmore, S.J. 1982. Beyond the Body. London: Heinemann.
    • Clahsen, H. 1991. Generative Perspectives on Language Acquisition [Language Acquisition & Language Disorders 14]. Amsterdam and Philadelphia: John Benjamins.
  • Essential notes (Footnotes/Endnotes) should be numbered in the text and grouped together at the end of the article. Diagrams and figures should not be any electronic files, for gray scales TIFF format is preferred, for line drawings EPS format.
  • The author of an article will receive page proofs for correction. Corrected page proofs must be returned to the editors by the date specified in the letter accompanying the proofs. This stage must not be used as an opportunity to revise the paper. Because alterations are extremely costly, extensive changes will be charged to the author an may result in the article being placed in a later issue.
  • Authors of articles will receive a complimentary copy of AILA Review in which their articles appear.

AILA :: Networks :: About Research Networks

AILA is looking for researchers interested in organizing Research Networks (ReN) focused on special topic areas of Applied Linguistics. If you would like to work internationally on your area of research together with other scholars from all over the world, you might consider applying to be a ReN organizer.

ReNs seek to promote the gathering and dissemination of information and the undertaking of research in all academic areas of AILA with a particular focus on areas that have the potential for new cross-disciplinary research.

ReNs exist for three years and can be renewed. At any point in time, there will be about 15 ReNs in existence. Generally, the life of an ReN is not expected to be longer than six years. Renewals beyond the six years would be determined by the criteria listed below.

For the formation of an ReN, the following criteria should be met:

  • at least five members, some of whom should be new scholars,
  • multinational composition,
  • participants are active in the research area of the ReN,
  • a program for research activities for the three years between congresses and a commitment to present at the upcoming AILA World Congress,
  • nominate from among their members one individual as the organizer of the respective ReN who liases with the ReN Coordinator.

How to set up a ReN

For new applications, the ReN organizer must submit a proposal to the ReN Coordinator at least two months prior to the World Congress. The proposal should consist of

  • a statement concerning the scope of the ReN,
  • a list of the participants of the ReN and their affiliation,
  • a plan for ReN activities for the upcoming three years, and
  • a commitment to fill their ReN slot at the AILA Congress three years hence.

Each ReN organizer is responsible for a brief written report to the ReN Coordinator on an annual basis.

When possible, AILA will, upon written request, consider limited financial support for ReN activities.

Applications to set up a new ReN should be directed to the AILA ReN Coordinator.

How a former Scientific Commission (SC) can continue as a ReN

If a current Scientific Commision (SC) of AILA has been demonstrably active, it may continue its research as an ReN by meeting the criteria listed in the section above.

For continuation as a ReN, the presently designated Scientific Commission convener and, in future, the ReN organizer must submit to the ReN Coordinator no more than two months following the World Congress a proposal which demonstrates an active research profile in the preceding three years. In addition, at the most recent AILA Congress, they must have filled their SC/ReN slot with presentations relating to the domain of their ReN/SC.

Specifically, the proposal should consist of:

  • evidence of past activities including a description of the session at the most recent AILA World Congress and a statement of evolving research interests of the ReN/existing SC,
  • a plan for ReN activities for the upcoming three years,
  • a list of the participants of the ReN and their affiliation,
  • a commitment to fill their ReN slot at the AILA Congress three years hence.

The decision for renewal will be based on fulfillment of the above criteria as determined by the ReN-Committee as defined in the Bylaws of AILA.

It will be the task of the ReN coordinator to notify the ReN organizers of the specific submission date for proposals to continue and the criteria for continuation.

ReN organizers will be notified of the decision no later than two months after the proposal submission deadline.

Note: A list of the former Scientific Commissions is still available.
