AILA is the acronym for Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquée or International Association of Applied Linguistics.
AILA is the international federation of national or regional associations of Applied Linguistics. Through its member associations, AILA currently has a membership of more than 8.000 individuals worldwide who as researchers, policy makers or practitioners are active in the field of Applied Linguistics.
Applied Linguistics is an interdisciplinary field of research and practice dealing with practical problems of language and communication that can be identified, analysed or solved by applying available theories, methods and results of Linguistics or by developing new theoretical and methodological frameworks in Linguistics to work on these problems. Applied Linguistics differs from Linguistics in general mainly with respect to its explicit orientation towards practical, everyday problems related to language and communication.
The problems Applied Linguistics deals with range from aspects of the linguistic and communicative competence of the individual such as first or second language acquisition, literacy, language disorders, etc. to language and communication related problems in and between societies such as e.g. language variation and linguistic discrimination, multilingualism, language conflict, language policy and language planning.
AILA is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) enjoying Status B (mutual information and consultation) with UNESCO.
In applying for a Solidarity Award, individuals or affiliates applying on behalf of an individual must send all the following documents:
A one-page letter of application giving the motivation of the applicant to participate, the reasons why participation without the award might be impossible, and how the applicant intends to make use of the congress participation afterwards;
A proposed budget for the expenses;
A CV from the applicant, showing evidence of academic excellence and/or promise;
A letter of support from an AILA affiliate association, a Scientific Commission or a senior academic who is acquainted with the candidate's work;
A copy of the abstract accepted to the upcoming AILA World Congress or evidence of a firm invitation to take part in a symposium or Scientific Commission session.
Successful applicants must provide the AILA Executive Board with a one-page report within a month of the congress; the reports will be published in AILA News.
Applications should be sent by e-mail only to the chair of the Solidarity Committee of the AILA Executive Board:
Associate Prof. Marilda C. Cavalcanti

§ 2: Procedures for Election of Executive Board Members
Nominations
At least four months before the date of the election, the SG is to invite the members of the IC to submit their nominations.
Nominations must be made in writing and should reach the SG not later than two months before the date of the election. Nominations must be for specified offices. They should be accompanied by a 2-page CV of the nominee and a statement of acceptance of the nomination. A nominee can be a candidate for more than one office, but once elected to one office, the candidacy in any subsequent elections is automatically withdrawn.
The SG is to send the list of nominees to each member of EBIC one month in advance of the relevant business meeting.
Nominations from the floor (i.e., from any IC member) may only be made if either:
a sole candidate for an office withdraws from candidature before the election, or
a single candidate for an office fails at the ballot to obtain a simple majority.
Balloting procedures
At the time of the elections (i.e., the business meeting at the triennial World Congress), EBIC elects two of its members to serve as Election Officers. These officers determine the vote count and report the results to EBIC.
When the list of nominations for the EB is complete, EBIC members vote by secret ballot in the following order:
President
Vice-President
Secretary General
Treasurer
ReN Coordinator
Publications Coordinator, and
Members-at-Large
If the election to a position is uncontested, the President is to declare the candidate or candidates elected unless a member of EBIC calls for a vote. If a vote is called for, every member of EBIC who is present or represented by proxy, is required to vote "for", "against" or "abstention" for each candidate. If the number of votes cast for a candidate is greater than those cast against, the candidate is to be declared elected.
If an election is contested, every member of EBIC who is present or represented by proxy is required to record on a single sheet of paper the name of each of the candidates for whom that member is voting. A member may not vote for more candidates than there are vacancies and may only vote once for any one candidate. The President is to declare elected to the vacant posts the candidates receiving the highest number of votes. In the event of a tie between two or more candidates, the President will flip a coin, or in the case of a Presidential election, the past VP will flip the coin.
Any appeals regarding the electoral procedures are to be directed to the President who may bring them to EBIC for discussion and a possible vote. An appeal is decided by a simple majority of EBIC. If the appeal relates to the election of a President, the VP is to bring it to EBIC for discussion and a possible vote.

If temporary membership is recommended, the association will be required to provide a written progress report at the forthcoming annual meeting and will prepare a dossier containing a-d above for the subsequent annual meeting.
In the case of a recommendation for either regular or temporary membership, the SG will issue an invitation to the association to send an observer to the next EBIC meeting.
Multiple associations
If there is more than one association in a country or region that aspires to become a regular affiliate member of AILA, each association has the right to apply for regular affiliate membership status. The case for each potential affiliate will be considered carefully by the SG who will present the applications to EBIC who will determine the appropriate action to be taken.
Completed applications

How a former Scientific Commission (SC) can continue as a ReN
If a current Scientific Commision (SC) of AILA has been demonstrably active, it may continue its research as an ReN by meeting the criteria listed in the section above.
For continuation as a ReN, the presently designated SC convener and, in future, the ReN organizer must submit to the ReN Coordinator no more than two months following the World Congress a proposal which demonstrates an active research profile in the preceding three years. In addition, at the most recent AILA Congress, they must have filled their SC/ReN slot with presentations relating to the domain of their ReN/SC.
Specifically, the proposal should consist of:
evidence of past activities including a description of the session at the most recent AILA World Congress and a statement of evolving research interests of the ReN/existing SC,
a plan for ReN activities for the upcoming three years,
a list of the participants of the ReN and their affiliation,
a commitment to fill their ReN slot at the AILA Congress three years hence.
The decision for renewal will be based on fulfillment of the above criteria as determined by the ReN-Committee as defined in the Bylaws of AILA.
It will be the task of the ReN coordinator to notify the ReN organizers of the specific submission date for proposals to continue and the criteria for continuation.
ReN organizers will be notified of the decision no later than two months after the proposal submission deadline.

The International Journal of Applied Linguistics (InJAL) publishes articles that explore the relationship between expertise in linguistics, broadly defined, and the everyday experience of language. Its scope is international in that it welcomes articles which show explicitly how local issues of language use or learning exemplify more global concerns. "It is only natural that an AILA World congress in Europe should focus on aspects of multilingual matters and the linguistic richness of this continent. The European Union and the Council of Europe have a clearly defined policy to preserve Europe as a multilingual and multicultural region. Because of the expansion of the European Union in the coming years, multilingualism and the challenges and opportunities connected with it will be a very topical theme in 2008, thus attracting a lot of attention and promising to be a great stimulus for academic debate. Consequently, the GAL-Executive and the AGM chose MULTILINGUALISM:
Challenges and Opportunities as the theme for the 2008 congress."
Deadline for submission of abstract proposals: 31 October 2007
The Conference "Language Issues in English-medium Universities: A Global Concern" will provide a forum to discuss and debate language issues in English-medium universities internationally. The participation of tertiary teachers, researchers, applied linguists and ELT professionals from all regions and contexts is welcome.
We welcome proposals for paper presentations, colloquia and posters discussing research in relation to any areas that fit within the theme of the Conference: "Language Issues in English-medium Universities: A Global Concern". Homepage: http://www.hku.hk/clear/ala/

Every three years, AILA holds its international World Congress. This congress is the biggest event in Applied Linguistics, bringing together - usually more than 2.000 - researchers and practitioners from all areas of Applied Linguistics for five days.
The Congress is characterized by high level presentations and discussions on key issues of the field. Its format includes keynote addresses, plenary speeches by outstanding scholars, invited symposia, symposia, individual papers and poster presentations.
The first AILA Congress took part in Nancy, France, 1964, presenting in its strands cutting edge findings from theory and practice of the time. Following this model, the programs of the Past Congresses represent the history of the discipline.
Each congress is organised by a different national or regional affiliate. The congress sites alternate between different areas of the world to reflect the global character of AILA.
