Scope:

The rapid advancement of digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) has opened up new horizons in language pedagogy and is significantly impacting language teaching and learning. Technologies such as AI-powered language tutors, adaptive learning platforms, Natural Language Processing (NLP)  applications, extended reality (XR) technologies, and gamified learning systems illustrate the transformative potential of these innovations and, at the same time, present challenges that warrant thorough examination and critical discussion.

The proposed Research Network (ReN) aims to establish a collaborative platform for exploring the cognitive, ethical, and pedagogical effects of integrating digital technologies in language education. The network recognises the interdisciplinary nature of this field and has as its central goal the discussion on theories and methodologies for understanding and addressing the challenges posed by these technologies, while maximizing their potential benefits for language learning.

Key areas of focus for the ReN are: Extended Reality (XR) technologies (MR/VR/AR) and Artificial Intelligent (AI). Research on XR technologies will look into how these extend the boundaries of traditional learning by blending physical and virtual elements, offering new ways for learners to interact with content, instructors, and peers. Research on AI will explore its pedagogical applications, potential, and challenges. For example, AI-driven applications such as intelligent writing assistants, real-time language tutors, and conversational agents powered by (NLP) can be investigated for their ability to enhance language learning outcomes. Further, gamification strategies, another priority, will be explored for their potential to increase learner motivation and engagement through interactive and adaptive challenges.

Beyond technological innovation, the ReN will prioritise the ethical considerations surrounding the use of AI in education. This includes addressing concerns about data privacy, biases in AI systems, and the potential implications of AI-assisted learning on creativity, autonomy, language production and societal communication norms. By fostering a global exchange of ideas and best practices, the ReN seeks to shape the future of language education, ensuring that digital technologies are employed responsibly and inclusively.

In sum, the ReN envisions a comprehensive approach to understanding and leveraging digital innovations in language learning, thereby contributing to the development of effective, equitable, and ethical language education practices.
