International Association for World Englishes (IAWE 25) – AILA

Dates and Venue: The 25th conference of the International Association for World Englishes (IAWE 25) will be held at Stony Brook University June 15-17, 2023. The conference is hosted by the Mattoo Center for India Studies and the Department of Asian and Asian American Studies, along with a number of cosponsors.

Plenary Speakers: The plenary speakers for the conference will include Tobias Bernaisch and Joybrato Mukherjee (University of Giessen), Patricia Friedrich (University of Arizona), Rajend Mesthrie (University of Capetown), Devyani Sharma (Queen Mary University), and David Crystal (renowned scholar)(online presentation).

Theme: The theme of the conference will be World Englishes in a multilingual world, which usefully reminds us that the world Englishes (WE) enterprise is not simply concerned with discrete varieties of English from a geographical perspective, but, rather, by a wider vision of the role of English in language contact and language hybridity on a global scale. In this view, Englishes worldwide occur not in a sociolinguistic vacuum, but in contact with multiple languages in diverse regions throughout the world.

Those intending to give papers at the conference are encouraged to present research on the status, functions and features of Englishes in particular regions and countries, as well as on a swathe of related topics which may include the following:

Topics for Abstracts (Partial List): World Englishes and advertising World Englishes and applied linguistics World Englishes and bilingual creativity World Englishes and bilingualism World Englishes and code-mixing/switching World Englishes and corpus linguistics World Englishes and cultural linguistics World Englishes and discourse analysis World Englishes and economics World Englishes and English as a lingua franca World Englishes and English-medium instruction (EMI) World Englishes and intercultural communication World Englishes and language attitudes World Englishes and language change World Englishes and language contact World Englishes and language description World Englishes and language endangerment World Englishes and language policy World Englishes and language teaching World Englishes and language variation World Englishes and lexicography World Englishes and linguistic landscapes World Englishes and linguistic theory World Englishes and multilingualism World Englishes and pidgins and creoles World Englishes and pragmatics World Englishes and second language acquisition World Englishes and social media World Englishes and sociolinguistics World Englishes and the media World Englishes and world languages World Englishes and world literatures
