Estonian Association of Applied Linguistics (ERÜ) Conference 2024

April 18-19, 2024

Exploring Language Diversity and Variation

Linguistic diversity includes the variety of languages as well as linguistic variability, which is a natural part of the language. Both syntax, phonetics, grammar and lexicon can be varied; language also varies when we talk about different registers (e.g. slang or academic), text types (e.g. blog posts or news), communication channels (written or spoken) and communication situations (formal or informal). Different sociolinguistic factors also influence language variation, such as age, gender, origin, education, field of activity, etc. Studying linguistic diversity will help us better understand the interaction of factors and nuances that shape human interaction in today's global society and facilitate intercultural understanding.

We expect papers and presentations discussing the following topics:

  • corpus linguistics and language technology
  • language learning and language acquisition
  • language models and language modelling
  • globalization, multilingualism and multiculturalism
  • lexicography and lexicology
  • translating
  • language planning and language policy
  • business and professional communication
  • language in the media and public discourse
  • sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics
  • cultural anthropology
  • cognitive sciences
  • etc.

The conference itself will take place in Estonian and English.
