AILA President’s Interim Report 2019

Dear AILA Members, International Committee, and Executive Board,

AILA has further advanced the new initiatives in organizational development and outreach. The aim of the measures taken in the last 12 months has been to tap AILA’s full potential as a global network of applied linguists and foster our impact and visibility by pointing out why language matters.

Measures to develop our impact include strengthening our two new committees:

• on Endorsing socially relevant policies
• on Deepening strategic collaboration

Measures to develop our outreach include extending our workgroups:

• on Interweaving academic networks
• on Leveraging the Word of the Year initiatives

Measures to develop our organizational potential include:

• implementing the AILA affiliates tandem initiative
• deepening discussions with national affiliates at their congresses
• scouting candidates and initiating affiliate membership applications
• implementing the AILA Multilingual Matters Library Award

Measures to raise our visibility include:

• fundraising for, developing and testing the AILA app
• launching the AILA newsletter, with, e.g., the AILA career center
• starting the AILA research debate

As always, it has been a great pleasure to collaborate with EB and IC members, be it in face-to-face meetings or through beta versions of the AILA app. And again, working with colleagues from ANeLA and AFLA to prepare the next two AILA World Congresses was an inspiring intercultural expierence.
