Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the March 2022 AILA Newsletter. This issue comes against a tragic backdrop in Europe that few could have imagined only a few weeks ago - the return of state-on-state violence of the kind that we see in Ukraine today.

We are reminded of the important role that AILA can play in creating a peaceful and sustainable future. While not of course a vehicle in itself for solving political problems, AILA can nonetheless contribute through its focus on research and collaborations to solving practical problems related to language and communication, for example, through language and conflict resolution and language and migration.

Several AILA events take place this year and in 2023. The highlights of our celebration of 60 years of AILA (in 2024) are the 60th Anniversary World Congresses to take place in hybrid form in three venues.

The AILA 60th Anniversary World Congress in 2023 will convene in Lyon, France, on July 17th - 21st, 2023. See details here.

Forthcoming events by affiliates in 2022 which will be held both onsite and virtually include:

Calls for Papers

There are calls for papers for special issues of journals:

UNESCO

AILA has a longstanding relationship with UNESCO. We have endorsed the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) thus raising awareness of social issues among applied linguists; click here for the UNESCO conference on 18-20 May 2022.

Research Networks (ReNs)

Research Networks (ReNs) seek to promote research and its dissemination in all academic areas covered by AILA, with a particular focus on areas with potential for new cross-disciplinary research. Members come from different affiliates, countries and regions. The ReNs facilitate regional and inter-regional networking leading to more joint engagements and exchanges. The AILA Research Networks (ReNs) committee has released the list of new and renewed ReNs.

Remembering John Trim

As we approach 60 years of AILA, it is appropriate to recall the founders of the Association and others who played a key role in AILA’s early days. In this issue, we remember John Trim (1924–2013) who was chair of BAAL (British Association for Applied Linguistics), vice-president of AILA (International Association of Applied Linguistics) and an honorary member of AILA from 1969 to 1997. John was also a key figure in the Modern Languages Projects of the Council of Europe from 1971 to 1997. See The John Trim Collection and an interview with him on the History of Modern Language Learning and Teaching by Professor Richard Smith and Professor Nicola McLelland shortly before his death.

With best wishes,
Azirah
