22–25 October – Council of Europe ‘conference of experts’ at University of Stockholm – one outcome was a recommendation to form an ‘International Association for Applied Linguistics’ (‘L’Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquée, L’AILA’)

26–31 October – Premier Colloque International de Linguistique Appliquée / 1st International Symposium of Applied Linguistics, organized by Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences, University of Nancy, France.
AILA was formed at this conference, with two main fields of interest: applied linguistics in (1) language teaching and (2) the statistical treatment of language.

12 July – 6 August – First Séminaire Européen de Linguistique Générale et Appliquée (Seminar on General and Applied Linguistics), Besançon, under aegis of AILA and AFLA. At this meeting, an AILA committee was formed.
