March 2025
Welcome to the March 2025 AILA Newsletter. The first issue of this year opens with many prospects for collaboration. An important benefit of being an AILA member is to be part of the AILA Research Networks (ReNs) https://aila.info/research/ that aim to tackle important matters and advance research on specific topics of Applied Linguistics through the collaboration of scholars to synthesize knowledge, examine the state of art, stimulate innovations and identify promising avenues for research areas of worldwide significance for the field.

Currently AILA has 16 ReNs that tackle important issues such as language for aviation, teacher identity, emerging technologies, multilingual approaches to fluency, research cultures, Open Scholarship, EMI; Virtual Exchange, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, migration, inclusive education, multimodality, autonomy, CLIL, language policy, to name but a few.

With an eye to further develop intra and inter-regional collaborations through AILA, we take this opportunity to share a report of AILA Research Networks for the period of 2024-2027.

AILA Research Networks

The AILA Research Networks (ReNs) are a key initiative by the Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquée (AILA) to address pressing issues in applied linguistics arising from real-world problems. Originally structured for 15 ReNs in three-year cycles, the framework was revised in 2012 for greater flexibility, especially in response to emergencies like the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2024–2027 call for ReNs aims to balance renewing established networks and creating new ones, aligning with AILA's by-laws while exploring innovative formats.

A formal call for ReN proposals was issued in 2024, with submissions reviewed by a dedicated committee comprising representatives from the Executive and International Committees. The 2024–2027 ReN Committee, led by Prof. Dr. Grégory Miras, includes members from Spain, Singapore, Brazil, and the UK. They reviewed proposals based on criteria such as team composition, international diversity, and strategic relevance to applied linguistics.

On November 24, the committee approved 16 ReN proposals, including 4 new projects and 12 renewals, showcasing the diversity of approaches in applied linguistics. The list of ReNs is available on the AILA website https://aila.info/research/list-of-rens/ and showcases the diversity of research in applied linguistics.

Our promotion policy for Research Networks (ReNs) over the 2024-2027 cycle is designed to enhance visibility and engagement through a multi-faceted approach that targets applied linguistics. This strategy involves two complementary cycles aimed at showcasing the work of various ReNs and highlighting their contributions to the field.

The first system focuses on promoting ReNs that address specific topics. This will be achieved through webinars that bring together experts from different ReNs to discuss and share insights. These webinars will be recorded and made accessible online, accompanied by short videos tailored for social media platforms. Additionally, reports summarizing the webinars will be published in our newsletter, ensuring that the information reaches a wide audience.

The second system emphasizes the promotion of ReNs that deal with transversal topics. This initiative involves publishing comprehensive reports that delve into the broader dimensions of these ReNs, with a focus on their interdisciplinary impact. These reports will be featured in both the INJAL journal and newsletter, and will be supported by short promotional videos for social media.

By combining webinars, online publications, and social media outreach, we aim to create a dynamic and inclusive promotional strategy that effectively communicates the value and significance of our ReNs to the broader academic community and beyond. This approach not only ensures that the work of our ReNs is widely recognized but also fosters collaboration and knowledge sharing across different disciplines.

UNESCO Reports and Highlights

This year marks the quarter-century of dedicated efforts to preserve linguistic diversity and promote the use of mother tongue languages in education. To celebrate this milestone, UNESCO is launching a new report Languages matter: Global guidance on multilingual education which highlights the urgent need to include multilingualism in education systems so that children learn in a language they understand and speak fluently. Today, 40 % of people globally lack access to education in the language they speak and understand fluently. In some low- and middle-income countries, this figure rises to 90%. More than a quarter of a billion learners are affected. According to UNESCO’s World Atlas of Languages, there are 7,000 languages, spoken or signed, in use in the world today – and only 351 languages are used as the medium of instruction.

The new report was presented during a global event Languages matter: Silver Jubilee Celebration of International Mother Language Day, organized at UNESCO in Paris on 20 and 21 February 2025.
