Welcome to the latest AILA newsletter. July was a busy month with the executive board and the international committee meetings attended by representatives of affiliates. These were followed by the 20th AILA World Congress held in beautiful Lyon on the university campuses.
|
Warm appreciation and heartfelt thanks to the organisers of this congress, in particular to the co-chairs Gregory Miras, Nathalie Blanc and Isabel Colon de Cavajal and their team, for their tireless dedication to ensuring that the congress was a success. Lyon was the first of the anniversary congresses celebrating 60 years of AILA. It also celebrated 60 years of AFLA, the French affiliate. AFLA has a special place in our history as it was created simultaneously with AILA, in Nancy, in 1964. Bernard Pottier was the first President of AILA from 1964 to 1969 and other founding members included Guy Capelle, Antoine Culioli, Henri Evrard, André Martinet and Paul Rivenc. Thank you too to the AILA Solidarity Awards Committee – in particular, Coordinator Kyria Finardi, Co-chair Gregory Miras and Treasurer Marlies Whitehouse (https://aila.info/about/solidarity_award).
|
The highlights of our celebration of 60 years of AILA are being held in innovative formats in three locations around the world. In 2021, we decided that in view of the changed circumstances brought about by the pandemic and the increase in affiliates, the anniversary congresses would be held in different regions. Each one would be hybrid, but they would nonetheless offer a rich programme with enhanced opportunities for members worldwide to participate.
|
For a report of the congress:
|
"The symbol was strong: Association Française de Linguistique Appliquée hosted the 20th anniversary congress of Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquée, marking the start of their joint anniversary, both founded in 1964 in Nancy (France). Aiming to respond to real contemporary problems, this congress emphasized a human scale, inclusion and sustainable development. The world is changing, and so must the way we do research. This is what the AILA 2023 congress sought to do, both in terms of content and form. The world is changing and we need to innovate to protect the future."

ReN News
Research Networks (ReNs) seek to promote research and its dissemination in all academic areas covered by AILA, with a particular focus on areas with potential for new cross-disciplinary research. The ReNs facilitate regional and inter-regional networking leading to more joint engagements and exchanges.

AILA Review
AILA review is the Scopus indexed journal of AILA that is published by John Benjamins. AILA Review invites applied linguistic scholars and practitioners to submit proposals for a thematic issue, which addresses socially relevant problems in which language learning, research, and practice play a key role. Proposals for thematic issues should include (1) the title of the proposed issue, (2) the purpose of the proposed issue and its relevance, (3) the table of contents, and (4) 300-word abstracts of all papers included, along with author name(s) and affiliation(s). Depending on the guest editor(s)' preference, each issue should contain 6–8 articles, which will normally each be of 10,000 (8 articles) to 15,000 words (6 articles) in length, including tables and figures. This should be sent by e-mail to eeling.low@aila.info and more information can be found at https://benjamins.com/catalog/aila.

Meetings with AILA affiliates
As AILA has expanded to include some 35 affiliates, we realise the need to engage more with each and every one of them. For this reason, we - the President, VP and Secretary General (Azirah Hashim, Kyria Finardi and Laura Gurzynski-Weiss) - have had individual meetings throughout the course of this year to find out more about affiliates’ activities, their concerns and interests, and how AILA can assist them further. Some pictures from the meetings:
