Special Issue on Virtual Exchange:
Language Learning and Teaching in an Age of Complexity –
Selected Papers From AILA 2021

guest edited by Carolin Fuchs and Marina Orsini-Jones

This special issue draws from papers on Virtual Exchange (VE) or Telecollaboration or Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) presented at the AILA congress 2021, with the theme ‘The dynamics of language, communication and culture in a changing world’. AILA 2021 was hosted virtually by the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. One of the strands in the conference was the theme of VE/Telecollaboration or COIL. This special issue focuses on this topic and includes papers delivered at two VE-based symposia.

Historical Figures in Applied Linguistics

As we approach 60 years of AILA, it is appropriate to recall the founders of the Association and others who played a key role in AILA’s early days. In this issue, we remember Pit Corder who was President of AILA from 1969 to 1972 and the first chair of the British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL). Pit held the post from 1967, the founding year, to 1970. The following links provide further information:

Open Accessible Summaries in Language Studies (OASIS)

New email service by OASIS Database

The OASIS database (https://oasis-database.org) aims to make research in language studies more accessible to practitioners, such as teachers and curriculum developers. They currently have over 1350 one-page summaries written in non-technical language freely available on the website. New summaries are added every week, including summaries of all new research articles appearing in Language Learning, TESOL Quarterly, The Modern Language Journal, and Studies in Second Language Acquisition.

To make it even easier to keep up with the latest research, their monthly newsletter is replaced with an automated weekly email containing links to new summaries. Two options are provided:
  1. Sign up to all summaries. Every week you will receive an email with links to all new summaries. This option is recommended if you have wide-ranging interests or are interested in all new language-related research;
    OR
  2. Subscribe to keywords that match your interests. Every week you will receive an email with links to all new summaries that match your selected keywords.
