On behalf of the International Association for Applied Linguistics, of which Prof. Christopher Candlin was the President from 1996-2002, I wish to express our most heartfelt condolences to his family at the loss of this influential scholar, generous mentor and professional giant in our field. In the last forty years, Chris Candlin has shaped Applied Linguistics from a field mainly dedicated to the psycholinguistics of English language teaching to a multidisciplinary field of research interested in how language is used in various social, cultural and professional contexts. During his term as President of AILA, he was the driving force behind the establishment of research networks that fostered research across AILA's various affiliates. He was our compass for scientific integrity, professional responsibility, and intellectual generosity. We were happy to be able to recognize his extraordinary achievements by awarding him an AILA Honorary Membership at AILA's 2014 World Congress in Brisbane, Australia. We will miss him sorely.

Claire Kramsch, AILA President
